ONE thousand square metres of grass in a York stray has been destroyed by fire in a suspected arson attack.

North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said crews from Huntington, Acomb and York were called to the blaze on Bootham Stray at just after 3.15pm today.

"The fire measured 1,000 square metres," said a spokesman. "The crews used four hose reel jets and beaters to extinguish it. Damping down was completed by 4.10pm. This was believed to have been a deliberate fire."

A crew from Acomb went out at the same time to another fire in a field in Askham Lane, which affected 100 square metres of grass and trees.

"Crews used beaters, shovels and buckets of water to extinguish this and ensured the fire was out using a hose reel jet," said the spokesman, adding that this was also thought to have been deliberately started.
