UP to 100 new jobs could be created if a Hunmanby firm is granted permission to expand its base.

Deep Sea Electronics has applied to Scarborough Borough Council to create a two-storey office block and associated parking at Highfield House at Hunmanby Industrial Estate in Bridlington Road, near Filey.

The plans have been recommended for approval when they go before the council’s planning committing tomorrow (Thursday).

In a report which will go before the committee, planning officer David Walker states that: “It is noted that the scheme would be a significant investment in the borough which the applicant states will ultimately lead to the creation of around 100 local jobs, with many of these being high skilled technical occupations.

“Further, it is noted that the applicant has arrangements with local educational establishments to deliver qualified and skilled people to the business, including young people.”

Seven people have objected to the application, saying it is “overdevelopment” of the site and warning of the impact of the extra traffic created on nearby Sands Lane.

Deep Sea Electronics was founded in 1975 in Scarborough before moving to Hunmanby in 2001.

It is one of the world’s top manufacturers of generator controllers, auto transfer switch controllers, battery chargers and vehicle and off-highway controllers.

The company employs more than 140 people at sites including Brazil, Lebanon, India and the USA.
