APPLETON-LE-MOORS
WaterWorks - The Northern Ryedale Singers will be giving a recital called Let It Flow at 7.30pm on Saturday, June 23 in the village hall. On stage - My Brilliant Divorce will be performed by the Library Theatre Touring Co in the village hall, Wilsons Lane, East Ayton on Friday, June 29 at 7pm. BROMPTON-BY-SAWDON
Community lunch - The Village Ventures community lunch will be on Wednesday, June 27 which is the fourth Wednesday in the month and not the usual third Wednesday.

Parish council - Brompton and Sawdon Parish Council meets on Monday, June 18 in Brompton Village Hall at 7.40pm.

Church and gardens - The service at All Saints on Sunday is Holy Communion at 9.30am. In the absence of the vicar, who is on sick leave, it will be taken by the Rev David Clarke. There will not be any coffee afterwards to allow all helping with Brompton Open Gardens, which starts at midday, to get ready. The event runs until 5pm with last ticket sales at 4pm. Maps, costing £3, will be on sale at the village hall, where light lunch will be available. Money raised from the event will go towards church funds. Cream teas sold at West End are in aid of the village hall.

BULMER
Bridge club - The club met on Thursday, May 31 when the winners in the North/South seats were Angela and Ian Barnett with 67.1 per cent. Runners-up were Thelma Hardware and Tom Nutman with 55.2 per cent. East/West winners were Lesley and Arthur Conner who scored 64.9 per cent, followed by Anne and John Prest on 55.9 per cent. There were joint winners on Thursday, June 7 when Jane Bartlett and Sheila Briske and the pairing of Angela and Ian Barnett both scored 56.8 per cent. The club meets every Thursday at Welburn Village Hall and invites partnerships interested in joining the club to phone the club chairman Lesley Conner on 01944 768152.
 
KIRKBYMOORSIDE
Camera club - Kirkbymoorside and District Camera Club met at the Moorside Bar and Club for the best of the year print competition. The overall winning print was by Bob Ordidge with his image Snow Monkeys in hot spring, which also won the best natural history image. The runner-up was Janet Burdon with her image Winding Wall which also won the best pictorial image. In third place was Paul Stephenson with Mono Duo which also won best sports and pastime image. Mike Ward won best portrait with The Preacher gesticulating. The best architecture print was won by Richard Burdon for Blitz and Pieces. The competition judge was Mike Barnard from Bridlington. The trophy award presentation evening will be held at the next meeting at the Moorside Bar and Club is on Thursday, June 21 which is a Trophy award Presentation evening.

Heritage day - The next Kirkbymoorside Heritage Day, sponsored by Kirkbymoorside Town Council, will be on Saturday, July 28 from 9.30am until 4.30pm in the Methodist Chapel rooms, Piercy End. The theme will be Lest We Forget, commemorating the end of World War One and the impact it had on the town. There will be displays, exhibits, books and information as well as cakes and coffee. Entrance will be £2 and there will be a tour of All Saints Churchyard at 1 pm, with the opportunity to learn more about the residents who didn’t return home from the Front. Local actor Dominic Goodwin will present a selection from his upcoming revue in the Memorial Hall from 7pm and 9pm. There will also be a chance to learn about the Memorial Hall and gift from Captain Frank, who served in the Tanks Corps, to the town. Hedgehog rescue - The Daisy Garden Centre will be hosting a pop-in and chat event in aid of the Pickering Hedgehog Rescue this Saturday and Sunday. It is an opportunity to meet Deryn Hagemann, who set up the rescue last year from her home in Pickering. She will be on hand to offer advice and information for anyone wanting to learn more about hedgehogs and about the work of the rescue. Alongside her will be local woman Lesley Hughes, who has been fundraising through sales of her characterful magnets, which are on sale at Moorside Stores, Eastgate Vets, Moorside Pets as well as Daisy Garden Centre. To date sales have raised more than £390 for the building works in the hedgehog ward. The Kirkby Fruit Project (KBP) are creating a banner for the rescue centre to use at future events. The group are always in need of disinfectant wipes, washing powder, kitchen roll, bleach and wet or dry meat-based cat food which can be dropped off this weekend.

Car boot - The Kirkbymoorside support group for Marie Curie is holding a country house car boot sale at Welburn Manor on Sunday, June 24 by permission of Colonel and Mrs J Shaw. Classic car show - The third Father’s Day Classic Vehicle Show is to be held at the Moorside Bar & Club, Shaw Drive, on Sunday, June 17 from 11am until 5pm. Last year’s event attracted a wide selection of about 50 cars, lorries, tractors and motorcycles. There is no charge for anyone wishing to bring their vehicles for display. Open garden - Mick and Ann Potter, who opened their garden at Penny Piece Cottage on Sunday, May 27, as part of the National Gardens Scheme raised £2,138. The scheme supports many known charities including Macmillan Cancer Care, Marie Curie, Parkinson’s UK and the MS Society.

Teddy bears’ picnic - All Saints junior church is organising a teddy bear picnic for fives and under on Saturday, June 23 between 2pm and 4pm in the church. Children are invited to bring along a parent and their favourite teddy bear.

Messy church - There will be a meeting of Messy Church in the Methodist Church, Piercy End, on Monday, June 18 between 4pm and 4pm. There is no entry charge.

Musical evening - All Saints Church will host a musical evening on Friday, July 6 with Paul Tranmer and friends, featuring Alastair Coughlan, Marjorie Coughlan, Clare Haynes, Liz Sayers and the Northern Ryedale Singers. The concert starts at 7,30pm and entry is by donation. Refreshments will be available and there will be a raffle.

Horticultural society - Members will meet on Friday at the home of Viv Webster when the schedule of classes for this year’s open show, which will be held Saturday, September 22, will be arranged. The society would welcome anyone who would like to help on the day of the show or the previous evening to help with the staging. Bridge club - Beryl Bramall and Madeleine Webber were the winners in last Wednesday’s Pairs at Malton Bridge Club. Runners-up were Sally Beswick and Teresa Belt while Ed Robinson and Dave Massey took third place. Madeleine Webber has now been the winner in three of the four summer sessions to date.

MIDDLETON
Lacemakers - Pickering Lacemakers will meet in the village hall on Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

NAWTON
Summer fair - Friends of Nawton Primary School are holding a summer fair on Saturday in the school grounds from 2pm until 5pm. There will be seaside in a box competition with the winner receiving Lightwater Valley tickets. Second prize is a family pass to Castle Howard and third prize a Helmsley Castle pass. It is £2 to enter and boxes can be taken on the day. People can enter as many boxes as they like. There will be a competition to guess how many shells there are in a jar with a weekend away for the winner. Other attracts are surf the waves, donkey rides, ice creams, sweet stall, music by Kirkbymoorside beginner and leaner bands, and traditional games. Entry is free.

NEWTON-ON-RAWCLIFFE
Anniversary service - The annual choir anniversary service will be held in the Methodist Chapel at 6.15pm on Sunday, June 24. It will be led by Jackie Recchia, with items sung by the choir. Supper will be served in the village hall after the service. It will be the last anniversary service to be held in the chapel, as it will close later in the year.

PICKERING
Flower demonstation - Pickering Flower Club welcomed Nichola Davis-Murray to the WRVS Hungate Centre on Wednesday, May 23 when she gave a demonstration called Twigs & Twine. The next club meeting is the annual outing on Saturday, June 23 On Wednesday, July 25 there will be a demonstration by Sue Maddocks called Summertime.

Bridge club - Winners of the latest session of duplicate bridge were Rob Ashdown and John Bramall with 62.5 per cent. In second place were Tricia Pearce and Madge Allison with 61.11 per cent and in third place with 51.39 per cent were Isa Eggleston and Jacki Foggin.

Modified cars - The Yorkshire Modified Car Show will be held on Malton Road from 9am to 5pm on Sunday. It will include the Yorkshire Top 20 Show Car competition, indoor specialist trade village, dancers and models, trade stands, radio-controlled drift car arena, club stand displays, modern funfair, time attack obstacle course other attractions. Car parking is free.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society held its June meeting at the home of Sue and David Marshall last week when members discussed various aquatic topics and made plans for their forthcoming meetings. Society chairman Steven Russell won the best exhibit at the Select (Scunthorpe) Aquarist Society Open Show with a breeding group of Loricarins.

Charity fundraiser - The Recreation Club, Mill Lane will stage a charity Country Classics evening on Saturday, June 30. The show will include solo tributes to great country artists including Hank Williams, Tom McGraw, Willie Nelson, Don Williams, Charlie Rich and Vince Gill. Musical Memories - There will be a meeting of Musical Memories in the library on Monday, June 25. This is a new venue for this session, which will run from 11am to noon. The aim is to provide sessions where people can meet up with friends to sing some songs together and have a cup of tea. It is a community interest company and is a not-for-profit company. A minimum voluntary contribution of £3 per person, which includes refreshments, is requested.

Carers’ meet - On Wednesday June 20, from 10am to noon at the Friends’ Meeting House, Castlegate, there will be a meeting for carers to have a chat, a cup of tea and a chance to meet new people and make friends for carers.

RILLINGTON
Bingo - The May prize bingo held in Woodlands Community Centre raised £400 for Malton Hospital. The caller was Melvyn Jacques and the checker Sue Nelson. The next prize bingo at the centre is in aid of Heslerton Bowls Club and will be held on Wednesday, June 27.

Quiz - Jennie will be hosting a mega quiz in the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. Entry is £2 and includes cash prizes to third place, a cash jackpot and hot supper. The Sunday night quiz, hosted by Thomas was won by Gary, Steve and Co.

Clearing up - A Love Where You Live action evening to rid the village of weeds and litter will be held on Wednesday, June 20. Volunteers should meet in village hall car park at 6.30pm with suitable footwear. Tools will be provided.  

RYEDALE
Show time - The Yorkshire Pelargonium and Geranium Society’s annual show will be held on Sunday, June 24 at Hunmanby Community Hall, from noon until 4pm. It will include a new feature with past national champion, Ken Abel, conducting two masterclasses on showing and growing the plants. Admission to the show is £1 and this includes entry to the workshops which begin at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. There will also be plants for sale and refreshments will be available. SEAMER
St Martin’s - The vicar the Rev Andrew Moreland presided and preached at the 9.30am service of Holy Communion on Sunday. His sermon was based on the day’s reading from Paul’s second letter to the church in Corinth. The Rev Moreland used Paul’s words to illustrate people’s relationship with God, asking whether like Paul, faith gives people the confidence to trust in God even through all the challenges and demands of life. Rev Moreland led and preached again at the shorter modern service at 11am. He also led the intercessions and Jean Fiedler read. The sung worship was led by Steve Raettig, with Richard Fuller, John and Sue Grice and John Taylor. Liz Cremer was the sidesperson, Esme Raettig took the offering and Helen Swallow served refreshments after the service.

Fun day - The annual St Martin’s church fun day will be held in the church grounds on Saturday, June 23 from 2pm to 4pm. Among the attractions are craft and teddy stalls, a chocolate tombola, face painting, family games and refreshments. Entrance is free.

SHERBURN
St Hilda’s - Morning worship at St Hilda’s Church was led by Barbara Grice who took Faith as her theme. Bill Hyndford provided the music on the keyboard and the lesson from Corinthians was read by Christine Ashton. Sidespersons were Keith and Jean Usher, who also served coffee at the close of the service. The next service at St Hilda’s will be Holy Communion on Sunday, June 24 when the Rev Joe Kinsella will officiate. The gardens at Jackson’s Wold will also be opened for charity on that day, when tea will be served by the women of the church. All proceeds will be donated by Mr and Mrs R Cundall to St Hilda’s.

Family fundraiser - The recent family fundraiser raised £370 towards the bench in memory of Jane Cawood raised £370.

Auction - There will be an auction in aid of the village hall maintainence fund on Friday, June 29, in the hall. Viewing starts at 7pm with the auction at 7.30pm. There are more than 40 lots including day’s racing at Beverley, Ripon and Thirsk, FlamingoLand tickets, family tickets to Burton Agnes Hall, Nunnington Hall and Wolds Way Lavender, golf for four at Scarborough North Golf Club, guided tour of museum and afternoon tea for six at Grange Farm, East Heslerton, annual membership of Scampston Hall and Walled Garden.

Village show - Schedules are available for the show which will be held on Sunday, August 12 in the village hall from 1pm to 3.30pm. Entry is free. A raffle will be drawn at 3pm. There will be an after-show barbecue in the car park of the East Riding pub from 4pm onwards.

Super heroes - Messy Church held super hero birthday party at the Methodist Church on Saturday. Robert and Elliott blew out the candles on the superhero birthday cake their dad made for them. After a game there was bubble prayer time and this will be repeated at the next Messy Church session which will be held at 4.4pm in the garden of Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street on Saturday, July 14.

Cricket final - Sherburn C of E School’s cricketers have made it through to the final leg of the Scarborough League and will play next Tuesday.

Letters draw – Sherburn FC’s draw on Saturday produced the letters J, K and Y.  As there was no winner the prize fund this week will be £405.

Luncheon club - Instead of lunch this month the Senior Citizens’ Luncheon Club will meet for afternoon tea on Wednesday, June 20 in the garden at Forge Villa, 31 St Hilda’s Street, by invitation of Mr and Mrs Cade. Members should meet from 2.30pm for tea at 3pm.

Methodist news - The Tuesday coffee morning hostess was Judith Ruston and your donations for coffee continue to be given to the Air Ambulance. Sunday worship was led by Lorraine Booth and the steward was Liz Aconley. Vestry prayers were led by Sandra Cade and the welcomer was Kim Canterbury, who also read the lesson from Mark’s Gospel. Jean Brown read the epistle from 2 Corinthians. A drama, God is Building a House was performed. Jean was the master builder and her workforce was Evie, Winnie, Luke, India Kiara and apprentice Jacob. The organist was assisted by Robin Magowan on guitar. After worship coffee was enjoyed in the hall. The service on Sunday at 10.30am will be led by the worship team

SHERIFF HUTTON
Charity jumble - Sheriff Hutton Jumblies will be holding a jumble sale in the village hall in aid of York Blind and Partially Sighted on Saturday, June 23 at 2pm.

SNAINTON
On stage - The Mikron Theatre staged its production of Revolting Women to a sell-out crowd in the village hall on Tuesday, May 29. It was written to celebrate 100 years of women getting the vote. Mikron’s music director was born and raised in Snainton. The play was performed by four actors. The raffle, bar and cake stall raised £600 for village hall funds. Mikron will perform Get Well Soon on Thursday, October 18 at Old Malton. It commemorates 50 years since the creation of the National Health Service. Tickets can be booked in advance via Mikron’s website.

Open gardens - The village’s open gardens event will be held on Sunday, June 24. Tickets and maps will be sold at the village hall from noon. There will be a cake stall, tombola and handicraft stall. Gardens will be open until 5pm. Lunches, snacks, sandwiches and afternoon teas will also be served in the village hall. There will be a plant stall at 12a Station Road. All proceeds from the event will help to boost St Stephen’s Church new roof appeal.

STAINTONDALE
Country market - The village’s summer country market is happening will be held on Saturday between10.30am and 2.30pm. It will include cream teas, cakes and homemade soups.

THORNTON-LE-DALE
Anniversary celebration - The Methodist Church anniversary celebration weekend included a visit from Malton Male Voice Choir under the leadership of Vivienne. They gave a varied programme of songs and hymns with sung solos.
Three songs were dedicated to mark the World War One centenary. Moira played a piano solo and the organist for the congregational hymns was John Woodmansey. The Rev Ruth Duck welcomed and thanked the choir. Supper was enjoyed at the close. The Sunday morning service was led by the Rev Mark Haynes. Lessons were read by Douglas and Mary. John was the organist.

Ladies Group - This month’s meeting took the form of Call my Bluff but was called What's in a Name? Philippa, the leader, introduced four women who are volunteers at Malton Museum. Some old words were put on a screen and three of the women revealed their meaning - two were false and one was correct. Tea and biscuits were served by Margaret, Joyce Gwen and Sue. The next meeting will be on Thursday, July 5 at 2pm when Mr M Bursell will give a talk called Winkles to Walls.

Bridge Club - The meeting on Monday, June 5, produced joint winners with 65.3 per cent - Pat and George Donnor and the pairing of Lynda Lockwood and Mary Mortonson.  In third place with 64.3 per cent was Barry Smith and Bob Wardell.

WESTOW
Summer fair - The annual Westow Cricket Club summer fair is on Sunday, June 24 between 10.30am and 1pm. There will be a variety of stalls both inside and outside the cricket pavilion. They include local handmade goods and cricket club stalls. Refreshments will also be on sale and there will also be a junior cricket match starting at 11am. The event is in aid of cricket club funds. WI REPORT
Snainton - Angela Howgate welcomed 33 members and three visitors to the meeting on Tuesday, June 5. There were also invited guests from Thornton-le- Dale and Wykeham & Hutton Buscel WIs. The minutes from May meeting were agreed and signed. Anne Pilgrim Green had finished and framed two paintings she had done depicting Snainton WI over the last 100 years. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Thornton-le-Dale Ukelele Band, who were making a return visit by the branch by popular demand. Everyone was encouraged to join in by singing, playing maracas, shaking tambourines and playing kazoos. The evening ended by everyone on their feet with a rousing version of Rocking All Over the World. A buffet supper was enjoyed. The winning handmade corsage went to Kay Clyde, second place went to Sue Lumb and Angela Howgate was third. The celebration afternoon tea will be held at Hackness Grange on Thursday, July 12.
