A VINEYARD has been selected as one of the top five in the country.

Ryedale Vineyard, based across two locations at Westow and Howsham, says it is “currently the most northerly commercial vineyard in Britain” and it harvests its fruit by hand.

The top five vineyards, which also include Denbies in Surrey, Chapel Down in Kent, Camel Valley in Cornwall and Three Choirs in Gloucestershire, were named as part of World Wine Week, which ran from April 30 to May 4.

A spokesman for World Wine Week said: “In the year between April 2017 and April 2018, UK wine producers planted a record one million vines, meaning an extra two million bottles will enter the market in 2018.

“The UK’s wine production has been on the up for well over a decade now, and with British summers becoming warmer, that trend is set to continue.

“Britain provides a truly unique climate for farming.

"There are more than 500 vineyards in the UK producing different types of grapes, with Chardonnay taking the number one spot as the most popular variety grown.

“Congratulations to the winners for all their hard work.”
