THE Yorkshire Silent Film Festival is bringing classic silent movies with live musical accompaniment to the cinema at the Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) next month.
Founded in 2016, the Yorkshire Silent Film Festival (YSFF) is one of the UK’s largest celebration of live-scored silent film. Each May, YSFF collaborates with cinemas, theatres and community venues across Yorkshire to present three weeks of live music with film, showing all types of silent film from the familiar to the virtually unknown.
Every YSFF event is a live performance; a wide variety of musicians collaborate to create unique, improvised scores for each film. YSFF also develops talent though Playing Pictures, a unique programme of workshops and masterclasses for improvising musicians to develop their film accompaniment skills.
The films at the SJT this year are:
Professor Vanessa’s Performing Wonders – Thursday 17 May, 1.45pm
Hamlet (1921) – Thursday 17 May, 7.15pm
Beggars of Life (1928) – Friday 18 May, 7.45pm
Speedy (1928) – Saturday 19 May, 7.45pm
