THE Vale of Pickering Probus Club celebrated its golden anniversary by joining together with a representative from Pickering Rotary Club in a special celebratory lunch.

The club’s inaugural luncheon and meeting took place on Tuesday, February 20, 1968, at

the Forest and Vale Hotel in Pickering.

It was formed with the blessing of the local Rotary Club and Rotary International as a means of providing a social club for retired business and professional businessmen.

By the time the club met for its second meeting, a total of 21 members had been enlisted.

The first members came mostly from the Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Thornton-le-Dale.

For most of the past 50 years, meetings have continued to be held at the Forest and Vale Hotel.

Likewise, the pattern of lunch, followed by a talk by a visiting speaker or member, has remained since that first meeting.

The Vale of Pickering Probus Club today still draws most of its members from Northern Ryedale and its membership hovers around the 30 mark.
