THE A64 through Rillington has been left with an eight-foot hole today after a water main burst overnight.

Nearby residents were alerted to the incident at around 6.15am this morning.

Erica Denton, who lives in Westgate, said: "We heard something at around 4am but assumed it was the heavy rain, however when my husband looked out of the window there was mud all over the road. We then got a knock at the door at 6.15am from a workman asking if we wanted to get our car out as there was a hold in the road. Fortunately our water hasn't been affected and the workmen have been very helpful."

Traffic lights have been put in place into the hold can be filled in.

Rillington suffered a similar incident shortly before Christmas when a water pipe burst near the former Methodist Church. Work was completed on that hole yesterday.
