POLICE are urging motorists not to drive unless it is essential following snowfall this morning.
The Met Office has forecast there could be between one and five centimetres of snow lying at low levels this morning.
Higher levels in North Yorkshire, such as the North York Moors, could see between five and ten centimetres of snow, with a risk of cars being stranded.
Ryedale Police said conditions were particularly bad in the Helmsley area.
The roads west of Appleton le Street are white over and get worse the further west you go. As of 11.50am Sutton Bank is open and passable with extreme care.
There will be a slight thaw this afternoon before it gets much milder over the weekend.
