Lunch - The first Village Ventures lunch of 2018 is on Wednesday, January 16.

Market milestone - The next market on Saturday, February 3 will be the 100th Hovingham village market.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE

Bridge club - The final game of 2017 had Pat Hainsworth and Angela Smith in top spot at North/South with 61 per cent, runners up were Enid Watson and Tim Johnson on 52 per cent. East/West winners were Gill and Trevor Hardcastle with 63 per cent followed by Bo and Tony Simpson on 59 per cent. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 9th January.

Tuesday Group - Janet Brown will give a talk called Jewels of Sri Lanka to the Tuesday Group in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, January 9. Jean will be the leader. Ann and Daisy will be the tea hostesses.

Postage stamps - People are being encouraged to save postage stamps for charity. Maureen Rolph will be happy to collect them from the town, Nawton and Beadlam and send them to four different charities. Phone her on 01751 432011 or email maureenrolphnews@talktalk.net

Menzown - There will be a meeting of Menzown on Monday, January 8, at the King’s Head, 7pm for 7.30pm. A total of £215 was raised for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance at the annual dinner in memory former treasurer Roy Bishop. There will be a thanksgiving service in All Saints Church on Friday, January 5 at 1pm, followed by a reception at the King’s Head.

Club act - Billy Leonard will be the performer on New Year’s Eve at the Moorside Bar & Club, starting at 8.30pm.

Sturdy Court - There will be a domino drive at the centre on New Year’s Day (Monday) at 7.30pm and another on Monday, January 15.

Julian meeting - There is no meeting in January. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 13 in the Catholic church.

Amnesty Group - Kirkbymoorside Amnesty Group met in Pickering for a card signing day and a total of 32 cards were signed. A card signing session was also held in All Saints Church. The group will meet on Thursday, January 11 at Chrissie's home. There will be no meeting in February or March. As a letter writing group from January, the group will maintain contact with other local group, its regional representative and Amnesty International UK.

Coffee morning - The monthly coffee morning in All Saints Church will be held on Saturday, January 6 from 9.30am to noon.

KIRKDALE

Quiz - The Kirkdale Christmas quiz in aid of St Gregory’s Minster and St Hilda’s, Beadlam, is available from local shops and other businesses. The theme is television and radio programmes. Quiz sheets are £1 each and the first three correct entries opened after the closing date of Saturday, January 20 will win prizes of £15, £10 and £5. Quizzers should note there is a correction to clue number 46. The number of letters should be 5,2,3,10.

St Gregory’s - There will be no service at St Gregory’s Minster on New Year’s Eve (Sunday), but there will be a Eucharist at St Hilda’s, Beadlam, at 9.30am.

NEWTON-UPON-RAWCLIFFE

Domino drive - There will be a domino drive in the village hall on Thursday, January 11 at 7.30pm. Admission is £1.50, which includes tea, or coffee, and biscuits.

Winter warmer - An afternoon called Winter Warmer, with mulled wine and nibbles, will be held in the village hall on Sunday, January 14 from 2pm to 4pm.

Craft and chat – There will be a craft and chat session in the village hall will on Thursday, January 18 from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is £2 which includes tea, or coffee, and biscuits.

Jumble sale - A jumble sale, organised by the Newton and Stape Kids Fun Club, will be held from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, January 20 in the village hall Refreshments will also be served. Admission is £1, which includes a drink. Any offers of jumble would be welcome, phone Cathryn on 01751 476592.

PICKERING

Band concert - The annual concert by Stape Silver Band for Yorkshire Cancer Research by on Sunday, December 17 in St Peter & St Paul’s Church raised £583. After starting with the march Florentiner, Lauren Breckon performed the cornet solo Bless This House. Chloe Brown and Sam Lee were featured as standup soloists in Paul Lovatt Cooper’s Fire In The Blood followed by carol singing from the audience. After Mack The Knife the first half ended with the theme to the film We Were Soldiers, beginning with a lone cornet, played by Jenny Winter and also features the second and third cornets, Jack Magson, Ines Jeffrey, Bethany Dadswell and Cliff Hicks, in the Last Post. Soloist Rachel Anderson sang a selection of favourite and Christmas songs. She was also joined in a duet by her father-in-law, Brian Anderson. The training band performed a number of pieces, including Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph. Helen Eddon was awarded the trophy for most improved player in the training band, with Jenny Winter receiving the most improved player in the senior band. Brian Anderson was presented with the award for work behind the scenes. The Player of the Year trophy was won by Helen Bointon. A further award, which was donated by the band’s new president, Chris Bramley, was given to Mike Breckon. In the second half, the band performing The Boar’s Head Carol, a German carol called Suesser die Glocken nie klingen, followed by a lively arrangement entitled Christmas Twins and ended with A Caribbean Christmas.

Super draw - David Scaling won £150 in last week’s Pickering Town Football Club’s Weekly Super Draw. The winning numbers were 7, 24 and 33. This week’s draw will be for £75. To enter the draw costs £1 per week per entry. To join see any Pikes committee member or call at Dunning Butchers Shop, Bridge Street. As well as the £75 weekly prize which is carried over if no winner there is a monthly consolation prize draw for £50 made on the first Monday of each month.

Fishkeepers - Ryedale Aquarist Society will meet at the home of Sue and David Marshall, on Wednesday, January 10 at 7.30pm. The annual open show will be held on Sunday, April 29 at Kirby Misperton Village Hall.

Pantomime - Pickering Musical Society’s pantomime Goldilocks and the Three Bears will run at the Kirk Theatre from Friday, January 12 to Saturday, January 20, with the exception of Monday, January 15. New Year’s Eve - The Recreation Club’s New Year’s Eve evening on Sunday will include a supper and dancing to four-piece band playing soul, folk, dance, and modern music. Family history - Ryedale Family History Group are offering free one to one sessions at the library on the following Tuesdays - January 16 and 30, February 13 and 27. The sessions are for anyone wishing to trace their ancestry and is either not sure where to start or needing some help to progress. The session times are 10.30am, noon and 1.30pm. Anyone interested should book a place in advance at the library in person or telephone 01609 533624. The sessions have to be pre-booked at the library and are not walk in sessions.

Domino drives - Pickering Cricket Club will be holding its New Year’s domino drive on Thursday, January 4 at the Recreation Club, Mill Lane at 7.30pm. There will be a domino drive for Pickering Bowls Club on Friday, January 12 at the Recreation Club at 7.30pm. It is £1.50 to play and includes tea and biscuits.

Used stamps - The Royal Mail office at the Thornton Road Industrial Estate is the collection point for used postage stamps for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Stamps may be left Monday to Saturday between 8am and 1pm.

RILLINGTON

Ladies Guild - Twelve members were present for the December meeting of Rillington and District Ladies Guild held in Woodlands Community Centre. The evening began with musical entertainment from David Swann who was thanked by Caroline Neuff. A faith supper and the draw for a Christmas gift followed. A business meeting was held to discuss the future of the guild. Due to a fall in membership it was regretfully decided that the guild would have to close. A total of £60 is to be donated to Guide Dogs for the Blind in lieu of rent for the venue. The remaining £200 of funds is to be donated equally to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, Hornsea Inshore Rescue and Ryedale Special Families. Copies of the YCA programme for 2018 were given out to Guild members who are not already YCA members. A final meal is to be held at Greenbanks on Friday, March 16.

Quiz time - Jennie will be hosting a quiz of the year at the Fleece Inn on Friday at 9pm. There will be cash prizes. Entry is £2 per person and includes a hot supper.

SHERBURN

New Year’s Eve - Ashley James and Robert Smith will be performing acoustic covers from the 1960s to the current year at the East Riding pub from 9pm on Sunday. Trilogy will be performing at the Community & Sports Club when the bar will be open from 7pm to 1am.

Defibrillator - A defibrillator, accessible to any member of the public, is situated outside the entrance to the Community and Sports Club. Free informal basic training is being offered to anyone who would like to know more about how to use the lifesaving equipment and perform basic CPR. Each session will last about an hour. SINNINGTON

People’s Guild - A Christmas concert was given by Allerston Aloud to the Sinnington People’s Guild on Tuesday, December 19. Led and conducted by Janet Magee, accompanied by Rosemary Knapton, the congregation enjoyed the Cantata and the programme of familiar and lesser known Christmas songs. Ten-year-old twins, Evelyn and Lilian Plowright, charmed everyone with their two songs. The evening concluded with supper. A total of £151.86 was raised for the overseas and home missions. The Guild resumes on Tuesday, January 9 at 7.15pm and will be a member’s night.

SNAINTON

Carolling result - The Snainton Carollers, recently spent two evenings singing around the village, raised £375.26 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

THORNTON-LE-DALE

Bridge club - Members had their Christmas lunch at the Forest and Vale Hotel on Monday, December 18. It was followed by a bridge drive, the winners being Pat and George Donnor with Hilary and Ralph Hurst in second place. The Sylvia Bray Trophy for the highest average over the year were Pat and George Donnor.

WOMBLETON

Village walk - The annual village walk is on Sunday, January 7 with a 1.30pm start. It is a circular walk of about two miles. Walkers should meet at the village hall at 1pm for the 1.30pm start. Entry £7 per person to include jacket potato with a choice of filling, followed by a sweet. It is free for children free but must be accompanied by an adult, as are dogs on short leads. Anyone wanting to go for the meal but not walk can do so. There will be a raffle. The organisers need to know numbers by Friday. WI REPORT

Kirkbymoorside - The Christmas meeting held on Monday, December 4, was attended by 27 members and one visitor. After the singing of Jerusalem and the regular business meeting, the secretary, Carol Smith, presented members with the challenge of decorating a pot of bulbs which we duly assembled. Carol judged Carol Bancroft to be the winner. Second was Jan Tattersall and joint third Jean Sherman and Jane Jackson. The Competition Trophy for 2017 was awarded to Carol Bancroft. Jane Jackson was second and joint third were Barbara Coram and Molly Stephens. The annual meeting was then held at which short reports were given and the committee elected. Chris Martin was re-elected as president. After carols, accompanied by Chris Martin, and readings, a buffet was enjoyed. The next meeting is on Monday, February 5 at 2.15pm in the Methodist Schoolroom.

YCA REPORT

Wombleton - The November meeting found members learning how to make decorative paper flowers. Tutor Daisy Barnes provided a wide array of materials and members created some interesting items. Twenty-five ladies attended the Christmas meeting on Tuesday, December 19. Carols were sung with Daisy Barnes on keyboard. A raffle was held and shared supper enjoyed. The annual general meeting will be held in January. Members were most impressed by the decorations provided and put up by the village hall committee. YCA meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, except August. New members are always welcome.
