AN allotment holder has put out an appeal for more people to rent plots.

John Wilson, head of the Rainbow Lane Allotment Association in Malton, said that there are between three and five patches available, or more if people want a smaller size.

Mr Wilson said the approximate size of the plots is eight yards by 25 yards, so they can easily be divided up.

"Such a large garden can be intimidating," he said.

He added that the allotments may particularly appeal to those with little or no garden of their own - which he suggests is more common in newer build houses.

"You get your own fresh vegetables, so it's cheaper. They always taste a lot better when they're your own, too," he said.

"It's a relaxing thing to do. And people can grow whatever they want to grow, there are no rules - flowers, vegetables or fruit, it's up to them."

Mr Wilson said the allotments, which are owned by Ryedale District Council and run by an assortment of associations, can be rented out for just £15 per year. "We're not in it for profit," he added.

The council run several other allotments across the district - for a full list with contact details for each, go to ryedale.gov.uk

Availability varies across different allotment sites. In Kirkbymoorside, there are no current vacancies and there is a waiting list in place. In Pickering, there are also no vacant plots, and there is also a small waiting list.

District council allotment sites are also located at Crab Tree Lane, in Malton, and the town council-run plots in Norton.
