A MONTH-long fundraising drive to collect items for the local Salvation Army is well underway as the charity marks its 150th anniversary.

The Salvation Army's annual Big Collection takes place this month and members of the Malton Salvation Army, friends and volunteers will be collecting throughout the month to support the work they do.

Matthew and Debbie Bennett, church leaders at Malton Salvation Army, said: "Our supporters are quite literally our lifeblood. Malton Salvation Army church and community centre is part of a network of more than 800 centres delivering services to people and communities day in, day out.

"Without public support we would not be celebrating our 150th birthday this year. We are so grateful."

Funds raised through the Big Collection will help the Malton Salvation Army to help the community, supporting men, women and families who are homeless.

They also run care homes and day centres for older people, reunite families through the Family Tracing Service as well as providing training and advice for people looking for work.
