A PICKERING teenager is getting ready to lace up his trainers to take on the Great North Run in memory of the grandad he never got chance to meet.
19-year-old Tom Wood will take part in the half marathon on September 13 and will be raising money for St Catherine's Hospice where his grandad Tom Mook died of cancer.
Tom never got the chance to meet his grandad, who died before he was born, but decided that he wanted to raise funds for the hospice for the help they gave his grandad, which he says he has never been forgotten by his family.
Tom said: "I thought this was an ideal opportunity to raise some money for a really good cause."
Tom, who studies at Newcastle University and works at Snainton Golf Centre during the holidays, has spent the last few weeks of his time off from his studies training for the 13.1-mile run.
