PUPILS at Nawton Primary School have been demonstrating their pedal power by taking part in Bikeability.

The scheme is an updated version of cycling proficiency with children completing a number of skills, including bicycle handling, cycling on quiet roads and how to deal with more complicated environments.

Caron Twamley, one of the instructors, said: “On the first day they are based in the playground and learn how to check their bikes then on the second day they go out onto the roads around the school.

“At the end they all have a small test and they are also presented with a certificate and badge.”

Mrs Twamley said it was something practical all the children could be involved in.

“It is a good scheme for teaching them how to keep safe when they are cycling on the roads, as well as how to look after their bikes.”
