THE long-running saga over the future of Malton’s Wentworth Street car park is expected to be raised again at tomorrow night’s meeting of Ryedale District Council.

Councillor Paul Andrews, who represents Malton, is a leading opponent of a plan by Ryedale District Council to sell part of the car park for the potential development of a supermarket. He has tabled a motion to ask what will happen if no supermarket chain is willing to develop a store on the site.

He said: “What are the council’s proposals for providing certainty to potential inward investors to Malton about the future of the town’s largest car park?”

Councillor Andrews will ask if the park will be sold to the council’s preferred bidder, Leeds development company, GMI, adding: “Are GMI obliged to continue its use as a public car park and, if not, what is the future of the park in those circumstances?”

The council leader, Councillor Linda Cowling, is expected to make a statement in reply, at the meeting.
