HELMSLEY Sports and Social Club is hosting the town’s annual family bonfire night celebrations on Saturday.

Taking place on the sports field, just off Baxton Road, gates open at 6pm with the bonfire being lit at 6.30pm and the fireworks display commencing at 7pm.

Run by Helmsley Bonfire Committee, led by Carol Swift, proceeds are in aid of the second phase of a major £200,000 programme of works to refurbish the sports and social club, including upgrading the function rooms, bar and car park.

The first phase has seen the completion of new changing rooms, kitchen, toilets and associated works.

Entry to this year’s bonfire is £4 for children and adults with under-fives free. In addition to the fireworks, there will be stalls selling food and toys, including cosmic swords. There will also be the chance to take part in a game inspired by the classic game show, Play Your Cards Right.

Carol said: “The Recreation Ground Management Committee would like to thank everyone involved for their support, including new sponsor Scotts of Helmsley fish and chip restaurant and takeaway, members of The Lions Club for running the gate, and a small army of family and friends who have built the bonfire and are helping with the cooking and the running of the various stalls and stands.”

People are advised to bring torches and dress accordingly. For health and safety reasons no one is allowed on the field if they have any fireworks of their own, including sparklers.
