THE next in a series of lunchtime talks at Scarborough Art Gallery will focus on the Bombardment of Scarborough on December 16, 1914.
Historian Keith Johnston will examine Scarborough in 1914, and the impact of the early months of the war, followed by a look at the bombardment itself – what happened, why and the impact, in both the short and longer term – and its significance within the broader picture of the Great War.
Mr Johnston taught history at Scarborough Sixth Form College before retirement. He has spent many years researching aspects of the local history of Scarborough and the Lake District, and also war memorials of the First World War in Yorkshire. He is currently chairman of the Scarborough Archaeological and Historical Society.
The talk will start at 12.30pm on Friday. Admission is £3, which then includes entry fee to both Scarborough Art Gallery and the Rotunda Museum for a year.
