New Earswick ARLFC caused an upset in the second round of the BARLA Yorkshire Cup by defeating Bank Top Harriers 20-14.

The visitors are a league above the All Blacks.

Bank Top took the lead after six minutes with an unconverted try.

But All Blacks countered in style midway through the half when substitute prop Jack Stearman broke the line and fed half-back Liam Gargan to race over from 30 metres out. Gargan added the conversion for a 6-4 advantage at half-time.

Just a minute into the second half Bank Top regained the lead with an unconverted try.

But All Blacks levelled from the boot of Gargan and regained the lead as Gargan put through a well-weighted grubber kick and swiftly followed it up to score. Just for good measure he also added the extras.

All Blacks stretched their lead when Stearman powered over from close range. That man Gargan was again successful with the boot.

Bank Top narrowed the gap with a converted try with four minutes remaining, but All Blacks held strong for the win.

The All Blacks’ man of the match was Stearman, backed up by second rower Adam Kirby and Gargan.

The reward for the stunning win is a third round trip to Thornhill Trojans on November 2.
