WOODHOUSE Grange will bring down the curtain on another season of success in the Hunters York & District Senior Cricket League on Saturday.

The Sutton-on-Derwent-based club will close their premier division campaign at relegated Selby aiming to put a winning seal on a fifth title triumph in six years.

Unbeaten Grange go into the game on 507 points, 105 clear of second-placed Sheriff Hutton Bridge, and captain Steve Burdett insists there is still plenty for the champions to play for.

“If we can go through the whole season without getting beaten in the league that will be an achievement,” he said.

“There are lots of good sides in the premier division. Everybody is capable of beating everybody else.

“To get more than 500 points – which was one of our targets – is a great effort. Another target is to end the season 100 points clear. Nobody has taken their foot off the gas.”

Burdett believes outstanding commitment is one of the main reasons behind Grange’s enduring success.

The skipper said: “Woodhouse Grange is the benchmark that people want to get to and we are 105 points clear, but I don’t think we are that much better than everybody else.

“We are pretty well organised and we have only used 14 players all year, which is a tremendous commitment from the lads.”

Grange have dominated the league and reached the final of the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy, losing to Hoylandswaine last weekend, but Burdett revealed there were still lingering frustrations from the season.

“There are lots of positives to take out of it,” he said. “But it was disappointing not to go further in the National Village Cup – and to get knocked out of the League Cup in the first round.”
