WOODHOUSE Grange’s 35-run defeat in the final of the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions Trophy left skipper Steve Burdett feeling a mixture of “pride and frustration”.

The Sutton-on-Derwent side, bidding to become the first York & District Senior Cricket League outfit to win the competition, pushed Drakes Huddersfield League side Hoylandswaine close in the final at Wrenthorpe.

Hoylandswaine batted first and totalled 211-9 thanks to 57 from former Durham county player Ryan Robinson and an unbeaten 71 by Australian batsman Michael Cranmer.

Grange’s David Suddaby claimed 3-57, while Andrew Horner took 2-29 and Nick Hadfield 2-40.

York champions Grange were bowled out for 176 in reply, with Tom Young hitting 46, Chris Bilton 29 and Steve Burdett 28.

Hoylandswaine’s Ben Potter returned 4-18 and Robinson 2-18.

Captain Burdett was delighted with the way his side competed against opponents boasting seven former and one current county player, but downcast that they came up short of victory.

“There are mixed emotions,” he said. “It was frustrating to lose after getting so close, but I was proud of the way we performed against such a strong side.

“A couple of things went against us. We thought we had Cranmer out stumped on 30 and that was probably the difference between chasing 180 and 212.

“We fielded and bowled better than them, but three of our top six got ducks and we didn’t bat our overs out.”

Woodhouse Grange have already wrapped up the York Senior League premier division title, earning them another crack at the Champions Trophy in 2014.

Burdett said: “We probably lacked a bit of experience, but it is a learning curve.

“This competition is about really hard, aggressive cricket, and on the way to the final we beat Bradford League champions Woodlands, which is a real compliment to the York League.”
