A RYEDALE man arrested as part of the investigation into the deaths of two jockeys in a flat fire has been released from police bail.

The 37-year-old man was arrested on September 5 following the deaths of Jamie Kyne, 18, and 19-year-old Jan Wilson in a fire at Buckrose Court, Norton, early the same day.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “The man arrested in connection with the suspicious fire at flats in Buckrose Court in Norton, Malton, has been released from bail.

“A team of detectives continues to work on the case and the fire is still being treated as suspicious. Police are still waiting for the results of forensic testing and toxicology reports.”

At the time of the fire, residents of Buckrose Court described how they had to jump from windows and climbed down drainpipes to escape the flames, which quickly took hold of the building.

The victims, both promising young jockeys, were found in a flat on the second floor of the property. Their deaths shocked the local community and the wider world of horse racing.

A memorial fund has since been set up in the name of Jan Wilson to allow other youngsters in the Angus area of Scotland – where Jan grew up – and in Yorkshire get involved in the sport of horseracing.
