A SPECIAL thanksgiving service was held on Saturday for the life of Laura Roberston-Tierney.

Friends and family gathered at Old Malton cemetery to remember Laura, known as Louby, and to share prayers and a blessing of the 18-year-old’s gravestone.

Conducting the service, the Rev Ian Robinson said that rather than being a sombre occasion, the aim was to remember Louby and her inspirational life.

“You can shed tears knowing that Louby has gone, or you can smile because she lived,” he said.

“You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back, or you can open your eyes and see all that she has left.”

Mr Robinson said it was important for those who knew Louby to cherish her memory and let it live on.

A musical tribute was also provided by members of local band Stranger than Fiction, all friends of Louby, who sang a specially-composed song entitled ‘Laura’.

Louby passed away at her home in Malton on February 29, following a battle with two aggressive brain tumours.

Shortly after her diagnosis, she set up Louby’s Lifeline to raise awareness of brain cancer and the appeal has so far raised £25,000.

Louby’s mum, Emma, said she had wanted to do something unique and special to remember her daughter now her gravestone had been chosen.

“A concert was held at Norton College last April which had been organised to raise funds for Lou,” she added.

“The money raised has been used to provide the gravestone for Lou and I would like to thank everyone from the local community for their support.

“Lou will forever be the brightest star and every day continues to be a battle for me and her family – Lou may be gone but in my heart she will always be with me.”
