FUNDRAISERS of all ages have been showing their support for Louby’s Lifeline with more than £700 raised over the past week.

The appeal, which is being backed by the Gazette & Herald, was set up by Laura Robertson-Tierney to help fund research into brain tumours and support others whose lives have been devastated by similar circumstances.

At just 17, Laura, known as Louby, has undergone months of gruelling treatment after been diagnosed with two aggressive tumours.

Each day is still a challenge but despite that, Louby, who lives in Malton, has set up an appeal – Louby's Lifeline – to help fund research and support others whose lives have been devastated by similar circumstances.

Louby collapsed in April and has since undergone two major operations as well as weeks of intensive radiotherapy.

Her mum, Emma, said that Lou's determination made her fight every day to continue with her rehabilitation.

“Louby wanted to do something positive and decided to work with her surgeon's charity, Brain Tumour Research and Support across Yorkshire. We realise that brain tumours happen to anyone, at any age and literally stop you in your tracks, “ Emma said.

“Research is poorly-funded with less than one per cent of funds raised for research into cancer devoted to brain cancer.”

More than £100 has been raised at a baking sale by House Martins day nursery in Malton while a bingo evening at the Steam and Moorland Garden Centre, near Pickering, collected £71.

Marcia Turnbull, owner of House Martins, said: “All the scones were sold before 9.30am, so Helen here had to make some more.”

Marcia said she had helped organise a bonfire night party at the Steam and Moorland Centre with Bernadette Hopkinson.

“We had a fun bingo as well and raised £71 for Louby’s Lifeline,” she added.

Sales of wristbands and donations from readers at the Gazette office in Malton have further boosted the appeal by £88.

Louby and Emma also attended a bingo night at Woodlands Community Centre in Rillington last Wednesday which raised £480.

• Gazette reporter Karen Darley is embarking on a sponsored swim with the aim of completing 22 miles – the equivalent of the English Channel – before Christmas.
