THIS week’s photographs have a theme of brewing and pubs in the village of Sheriff Hutton.

The pictures are part of a collection built-up over 30 years by Don Pomfret, who previously lived near Manchester and became interested in the history of Sheriff Hutton after helping on a number of projects, including a map and booklet produced to mark the millennium.

“A lot of villages had their own brewery as beer did not travel well,” Mr Pomfret said.

“Legend had it that Hopperton, who was the village joiner, made the beer barrels, which he rolled from his house down the village to the brewery, which is now Middleton House at the bottom end of Finkle Street.”

At the top of Finkle Street on the Square was the Packhorse Inn, which is now the Highwayman. The other remaining pub in the village is the Castle Inn on the Green. Wellington House on the Square was also an inn until about 1880 and was first the Lord Nelson and later the Duke of Wellington.
