RECORD crowds and entries, boosted by glorious sunshine, provided the 126th Malton Show with what the organisers believe was its best for years.

The show, which has been hit by heavy rain and losses in some recent years, saw its fortunes take a dramatic upturn due to a large number of other agricultural shows – including the Great Yorkshire – having to be cancelled because of the wet weather.

Organisers estimated the crowd to be in the region of 10,000 – the best for years.

Show chairman Michael Clearey was delighted with the success in his first year in the post, and which started from the point the gates opened and cars queued to get into the picturesque park grounds of Scampston Hall.

He believed many people had gone to the show after being disappointed that so many others throughout Yorkshire had had to be called off this summer.

He said: “There was a very positive feel about the whole day. It was a real success thanks to the great team of helpers.”

However, said Mr Clearey, he was keen to see more young people joining the show committee and helping to run the event.

He said: “I plan to visit the senior schools to encourage young people to get involved. Agriculture is an important part of Ryedale’s economy and it is vital that shows such as Malton thrive.

“Trade stands and stallholders seemed to have been busy which was a very encouraging sign.”

Mr Clearey said ground conditions had been excellent due to the park being on sand.

“The quality of the livestock entries was second to none – it was marvellous to see such an impressive line-up in the grand parade. We have had both quality and quantity in all classes – livestock, fur and feather, horticulture, crafts, horses, as well as our main ring attractions. I am sure we shall have had a big success financially, too.”

Malton mayor Coun Jason Fitzgerald-Smith said: “People came from all parts of Yorkshire and I’m sure our show benefitted from so many others having to be called off because of the wet conditions.
“We had a splendid balance of trade stands and stalls which provided a wide appeal top the many visitors and there's credit due to the organisers for all their hard work.”

Coun Fitzgerald-Smith said he was particularly pleased with the quality and quantity of entries in the horse and livestsock classes.

Show president Ian Hamilton said: “We have had big crowds, perfect weather – we could not have wished for better.”

The chairman of Ryedale District Council, Coun Eric Hope, was, with his wife, Daphne, a steward at the show's poultry section, said: “Malton Show is growing year on year. “It is a wonderful shop window for the farming and horticultural industry and has been a marvellous curtain-raiser on the Ryedale show season this year.”
