Crowds, which officials said easily topped last year’s attendance of 7,000, packed the picturesque setting, to see the very best of Ryedale’s farming scene in action.

Leading steward and show council member, James Patmore, said: “We had an excellent day – everyone is absolutely delighted. The crowds were there and the quality of exhibits throughout the show, was excellent.”

People were standing four and five deep to watch events in the main ring – something no-one could recall for years.

Grey skies and light showers had threatened the day’s events, but within minutes, sunshine and breezes became the order of the day and motorists queued off the A64 to reach the showground.

Former chairman, Charlie Breese, said: “We have not been making money in recent years but our losses are diminishing. This year proved what a great show Malton has.”

He added that the farming industry locally is fighting back against the recession and it was important that the public saw what it is achieving.

Canon John Manchester, the show president, and former vicar of Old Malton Priory, said: “The church and the farming industry have a great deal in common, with such events as harvest and the blessing of the crops, and it is so important in an area such as Ryedale. I think it has been particularly encouraging to see so many young people both attending and exhibiting – it augurs well for the future of the show.”

Many of the exhibits in the livestock section were also shown – and won – at last week’s Great Yorkshire Show, now the premier show in the English farming world following the demise of The Royal.

A new class at Malton was for North Country Cheviots which attracted a large number of entries.

Competition for space for trade stands and business stalls was keen with the most number of companies wanting to take part for a number of years.

Robert Wainwright, former president and show chairman, said changing it from a Thursday to a Sunday several years ago was now proving a big success because it was attracting more people, many of whom were families and tourists visiting Ryedale or heading to the coast.

He said: “The show is a valuable asset to the Ryedale economy – it’s a showcase for local businesses, but it’s still a traditional agricultural show.”

Now officials and the show council are making plans for next year’s milestone 125th show. The centenary show was attended by the Princess Royal.

Mr Patmore said: “We already have to or three plans in mind.”
