A FARMING family have expanded their business with a shop selling their home-produced meat.

Home Farm in Wilton has been in the Lunn family for three generations and is currently run by Richard and his father Ken, who is semi-retired.

Richard’s wife, Lucy, who also has a family background in agriculture, said they were both passionate about quality meat and its traceability.

She said: “We run the mixed farm but our main enterprise is beef cattle where we supply a large number of animals to abattoirs who supply large supermarket chains.

“Supermarkets are extremely strict on the age of cattle, which fits nicely to how we finish the commercial cattle. However, we quickly realised the rare, native and traditional breeds need a little longer to mature to produce the best quality beef which didn’t fit the criteria of the supermarkets.”

Lucy said: “On realising this we had one or two animals put in our freezer for our own use. Then we had a lamb followed by a Gloucester Old Spot Pig, which were more of a hobby for our three children Jack 15, Sophie, 14, and Olivia, 12.

“As you can imagine my freezer was rather full and so we shared the abundance of meat with friends an family who complemented us on its flavour and texture and encouraged us to take this further.”

Last spring Lucy gave up her job as a dental nurse to help Richard and Ken on the expanding farm.

“We converted the garage here on the farm to sell the meat to local people and called the business The Horny Cow,” she said.

“The name The Horny Cow of course was sparked by the horns on the Highland Cattle, as I wanted something a little tongue in cheek that people would remember.

“We now offer a variety of meats which are available to collect from the farm shop freezer as well as an online shop. We are now supplying a few local businesses too.”
