FARNDALE show committee members are looking for a new secretary to organise the annual gathering.

Preparations for the 101st show are already afoot, but officials are appealing for a new secretary to step into the shoes of Barry Sunley, who has arranged the agricultural event for the past three years.

Other commitments forced his resignation and show stalwarts, Arthur Carter and Dennis Featherstone, are hoping to find his replacement soon.

Farmer Mr Carter, who has been involved in the running of the event since he was schoolboy, said the historic show is a chance for people from across the dales to show their animals and produce and exchange gossip.

The 70-year-old, who is the committee's longest serving member, said: "The show is getting bigger and bigger and we have more attractions, such as the bird of prey display.

People come from all around the dales from Rosedale, Bilsdale and Farndale and it's the main event of the year.

"It's coming up to the time of the year where we begin organising everything but we are without a general secretary. It's a very important job and we would welcome applicants young and old."

The gathering is always held on August Bank Holiday at fields near Church Houses and is the last in the calendar of summer livestock shows.

Last year saw 1,000 entries to the animal and produce section - which was the largest number in the show's long history.

And to continue the success of the farming gathering, chairman Dennis Featherstone, who has headed the running of the show for the past 30 years, hopes some fresh blood will offer their services.

He said: "The show is always well supported by local people and visitors from away.

"It would be great if we could get someone to take on the job as secretary to book the attractions and generally organise the show.

"The new person for the job will have to attend a few meetings and they don't even need to live in Farndale."

For more information about the role contact the stand-in show secretary, Beryl Smith, between 4pm and 9pm, on 01751 432788 or Dennis Featherstone on 01751 433221.
