YOUNG riders from Welburn Hall School celebrated success at the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) National Championships, which took place last week at Hartpury College in Gloucester.

Nine-year-old Eleanor Senior and 14-year-old Ryan Clarkson represented Welburn Hall School at this national event, which was contested by riders from throughout the UK.

Eleanor Senior, from Ampleforth, won her dressage section before going on to take fourth place in the countryside challenge, a competition that required riders to demonstrate their ability to open gates while mounted and manoeuvre over and around obstacles. The dressage and countryside challenge scores were combined to put Eleanor in second place for the combined training section. Ryan Clarkson, from Thornthorpe, took second place in the countryside challenge and sixth place in his dressage arena. His combined training score placed him in fourth place overall.

Eleanor and Ryan were both riding Mr Blobby, a 13hh black gelding, loaned for the occasion by owner Nancy Collin.

The group instructor at Welburn Hall School RDA, Elspeth Crookenden, worked very hard in practise sessions with her enthusiastic young riders. The Welburn Hall RDA group meets each week and the volunteer helpers work alongside the school’s physiotherapist to provide children with an escape from their everyday activities and treatment routines.
