FIFTY-nine riders took part in the 14th annual Four Forfeits Fun Frolic on Saturday, April 4, a ride through the scenic Saltersgate Farmers’ Hunt country that is interspersed with fun challenges along the way.

The day started out misty, but by late morning it had cleared to leave a glorious day. Riders enjoyed a hearty breakfast at the Fox & Rabbit Inn, Lockton, before tackling the four forfeits with eager enthusiasm.

The first forfeit took place at the Fox & Rabbit Inn and was a test of memory.

Competitors were given one minute to memorise equestrian items on a tray, they then had to write down as many of those items as they could remember. Out of 36 items, competitor Lynda Varey remembered an amazing 34.

The next forfeit took place at the kennels at Lockton and was a test of skill devised by Simon Richardson.

Competitors had to guide a golf ball cunningly disguised as a fox through a maze and cover, avoiding hounds and the terrier man’s vehicle to get to his den.

Forfeit number three was a test of agility and took place at The Green, Levisham. Competitors had to complete an obstacle course while balancing a tennis ball on a racket, incurring penalties if the ball was dropped.

The final forfeit was held at The White Swan Inn at Newton-upon-Rawcliffe and was a test of skill. Competitors were timed as they attempted to knock down skittles.

Everyone had great fun and the results were as follows: Juniors: 1 – Anne-Marie Edwards, 2 – Abigail Duffy, 3 – Tat Heard, 4 – Callie Blenkard-Adkin Seniors: 1 – Diana Baylay-Cox, 2 – Lynda Varey, 3 – Sam Dring, 4 – Kerry Miller.

All competitors who completed the 14-mile course received a rosette in recognition of their achievement.
