I HAD the pleasure of watching a performance of Little Shop of Horrors by Malton School.

It can be described as a comedy horror rock musical, with songs delivered in the style of 1960s rock and roll, “doo-wap” and Motown.

The cast did a marvellous job and all the many hours of rehearsal paid off in a super performance that was enjoyed by everyone.

Every evening it played to a full house in the newly-refurbished drama theatre.

The lead roles of Seymour and Audrey were played by Joe Wing and Heather Staples. Joe’s portrayal of Seymour had just the right amount of sensitivity.

Heather has a strong singing voice and played Audrey with honesty and vulnerability. Wilf Kimber as Mr Mushnik had some subtle comedy touches and held his American accent very well – as did all the cast.

The sassy urchins were a delight and played with attitude by Eleanor Anson, Lauren Gregory, Polly Everitt and Becka Ingram.

Jamie Gough gave an excellent performance as the voice of the giant plant, Audrey II, showing off his rich vocal talent. But it was Sam Carroll, as the dentist Orin Scrivells, who stole the show for me with his natural comic timing, charisma and a good strong vocal.

Hayley Spiers, drama teacher and director/producer, put on a show that she should be very proud of.
