Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, until August 22

A HOPELESS, blundering band of pirates has landed in Scarborough and will be appearing at the Stephen Joseph Theatre until August 22.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, presented by the Stephen Joseph Theatre Company, has been given a Reservoir Dogs twist by SJT artistic director Chris Monks.

Cutlasses are exchanged for guns as pirates scowl behind dark glasses and rule the waves like the Mafia of the high seas. Frederic, loyal, young and free from his apprenticeship to a band of pirates, falls for Mabel, daughter of a major general, and this, and the abandoning of his pirate ways, causes distress to the pirate king and his lovelorn nursery maid, Ruth. Frederic is cajoled, threatened and tricked by the pirates and, with the help of a pathetic posse of policemen, chaos ensues with hilarious consequences.

Tickets cost between £9 and £19.50. Phone the box office on 01723 370541 to book.
