Whitwell On The Hill, YO60 7JS
Kirkham Priory is situated on the banks of the River Derwent, and is another site under the care of English Heritage. It was founded by Walter L'Espec when he was awarded land by William the Conqueror along with the land around Helmsley Castle, which L'Espec also founded.
It was originally built in 1125 as a house of the Augustinian canons. The Priory prospered under the patronage of the de Roos family who enlarged it in the 13th century. Other fine remains include the 13th century altar platform and gate-house complete with its remarkable heraldry.
Excavations have uncovered the chapter house, latrine and refectory.
Facilities: Kiosk for ice creams, cold drinks, gift shop, picnic area, parking.
Disabled Access: To most of the site, but assistance needed.
NOTE: Can be slippery in wet conditions - care needed.
