Castlegate, YO62 5AB
Following the Norman Conquest, William the Conqueror rewarded his faithful followers with land.
One of the followers was Walter L'Espec, who built Helmsley Castle on the land he received. Helmsley grew to prominence under the protection of the castle, but it was reduced to a massive ruined keep after a three month siege by Parliamentarians during the Civil War.
Additions had been made during the 16th century, with remains of the original interiors being retained and now housing an exhibition on the history and art.
The spectacular earthworks still remain, and the ruin still dominates the town conjuring up images of days past.
Facilities: Parking north of the castle (charge), dogs in some areas, souvenir guide available, exhibition, toilets in car park and town.
Disabled Access: No.
