Sports Club’s turn for revenge in cup

Ryedale Sports Club gained revenge over Kirkbymoorside Reserves by beating them on Saturday to win the Ryedale Hospital Cup in style 3-0 to make amends for the previous Monday's Moorsiders victory in the Gordon Harrison Memorial Trophy Final. In both finals the holders lost and the team playing on their home pitch lost.

On Saturday both sides were missing vital players due to injury. Ryedale started well with Adam Hornby going close with a 16-yard shot after seven minutes. A minute later John Sherwood had an 18-yard shot well saved by the Moorsiders keeper Syd Brackley.

The Moorsiders got their game together well. After 18 minutes they had two very good chances within a minute. Ryan Rivis had his effort stopped by a timely tackle by Simon Dale and within the minute Chris Hodgson shot wide from 16 yards.

After 20 minutes Hornby latched on to a good through ball but Brackley raced from goal to head off the danger.

Ryedale took the lead after 28 minutes. A great move was started by Ben Thompson, who passed to Heath Brown, who supplied a superb through ball for Adam Hornby to race on through and score with an unstoppable 15-yard right-foot shot. Two minutes later Ben Thompson had a 30-yard left-foot free kick go just wide of the Moorsiders' goal.

Five minutes before half-time Ryan Rivis hit the post for the Moorsiders and two minutes later the Moorsiders were reduced to 10 men when they had Eddie Strickland sent off for committing to cautionable offence s within 10 minutes or so.

In the last two minutes of the first half, Ryedale went close twice. A Thompson free kick found Brown who headed the ball down to Hornby, who shot over the crossbar from 15 yards and John Sherwood crossed from the left wing for Hornby to head the ball over the crossbar.

In the second half Chris Hodgson did well for the Moorsiders after 52 minutes when his 16-yard right foot angled shot produced a good save by Ryedale's keeper Rob Featherstone. A minute later Featherstone made a brave save to keep Ryan Rivis out.

Hornby scored for Ryedale after 66 minutes but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Ryedale doubled their lead after 69 minutes when Adam Hornby scored his second goal of the game with an excellent solo effort finishing with a fine 18-yard shot into the bottom corner. Ten minutes later Ryedale scored their third and final goal when Ben Richardson received the ball 24 yards from goal. He controlled the ball, looked up and lobbed Brackley to score a brilliant individual goal.

Five minutes from time Ryan Rivis received the ball 12 yards form the Ryedale goal. He turned, beating two men and unleashed an unstoppable shot which Featherstone didn't see until the last second, but he made the save of the game, tipping the ball over the crossbar to keep a clean sheet.

The game was enjoyed by a crowd of 192 with man of the match winners Ben Richardson for Ryedale Sports Club with impressive displays by Heath Brown, David Hoyle and two-goal hero Adam Hornby. The Moorsiders' man of the match was midfield player Shaun Coxwith, with an impressive display by Ryan Rivis up front.

Victory Cup

The Victory Cup Final for the league's top four teams will be played at Kirkbymoorside on Saturday, and May 3, kick-off 6.30pm, when league champions Ryedale Sports Club will play fourth-placed Gillamoor. To reach the final Ryedale beat league runners-up Kirkbymoorside Reserves and Gillamoor beat third-placed Sinnington.

Marisa Sports Trophy

The semi-final line-up for Saturday's Marisa Sports Trophy is Rosedale v Thornton-le-Dale Reserves and Slingsby v Old Malton 3rds.

Thornton-le-Dale Reserves are in their first season in the league and have never won the trophy and neither have their first team. The other three semi-finalists are all past winners.

To reach the semi-finals, Old Malton 3rds beat Kirkdale United 3-2 after extra time. Kirkdale United played all the game, apart from the opening five minutes, with 10 men after midfield dynamo Oliver Metcalfe was injured and there were no substitutes.

After a goalless first half, Robert McDermid scored to put Kirkdale ahead after 47 minutes. Dean Leadill equalised for Old Malton after 55 minutes. Two minutes later Old Malton took the lead when Jimmy Tompkinson scored but Kirkdale equalised after 65 minutes when Mike Turnbull scored.

No further goals were scored so extra time was ordered and Dean Leadill scored the second goal eight minutes into the first period to win the game for his club.

Man of the match winners were Elliott Taylor at centre back for Old Malton and Mike Turnbull for Kirkdale United.

Thornton-le-Dale Reserves beat Ampleforth 6-4 in a 10-goal thriller with both sides guilty of missing many chances in an end-to-end amd very sporting game.

The goalscorers were Jake Fletcher (4) and Neil Dade (2) for Thornton-le-Dale and for Ampleforth Ed Fawcett (2) and a goal each for Alex Shields and Gary Thornton.

Man of the match winners were Jake Fletcher for Thornton-le-Dale and Matt Thompson for Ampleforth. Ampleforth badly missed playmaker Huw Hodges who was working.

Union Rovers took a 25th-minute lead thanks to a Richard Abbey penalty when his side entertained Rosedale, who equalised two minutes later with a penalty scored by Matthew Gardner. There were no further goals scored so extra time was the order of the day, in which Rosedale had to dig deep into their energy levels and win the game thanks to goals scored by Ken Weatherill and substitute Richard Wilkinson. Man of the match winners were Lee Dunning (Union Rovers), Stewart Dawson (Rosedale).

Slingsby beat Duncombe Park 5-1. They opened the goal scoring after 20 minutes when Cirk Newton scored with a long-distance lob over the visiting keeper. Darren Dyer scored twice in each half to give him four goals overall and nine goals in the last three games. A minute before half-time Craig Newton scored for Duncombe Park with a 20-yard free kick. Man of the match for Slingsby was Darren Dyer.

To reach the quarter-finals a midweek second round game saw Thornton-le-Dale Reserves win 3-0 away at Gillamoor Reserves thanks to goals by teenagers Josh Beach (2) and Jake Fletcher. Man of the match winners were midfielders Dan Durant and Jamie Magson (Gillamoor Res), and Joe Wootton for Thornton-le-Dale Res.

Rosedale beat St Clements 3rds 2-1 after extra time. Dave Shanks put St Clements ahead after two minutes. Martin Foxton equalised for Rosedale after 47 minutes with the winning goal scored by substitute Jonathan Seller after 14 minutes of extra time with a 20-yard shot. Man of the match winners were Matthew Farrow (Rosedale), David Shanks (St Clements 3rds).

One second division game was played on Saturday which saw St Clements 3rds beat Pro-Pak 2-0. Shaun Webster scored in the first half, Gareth Moore with a 25-yard unstoppable free kick in the second half in a very enjoyable game.

Man of the match winners were Danny Snaith for St Clements 3rds and player/manager Tim Peacock for Pro-Pak award.

Panasonic League Division 2 Cup

The final was held on Monday night with St Clement's 3rds beating Duncombe Park 2-1 in an end-to-end thriller watched by a crowd of 78.

In a game of two halves, Duncombe Park started superbly and took the lead after three minutes when Craig Newton supplied a good pass to Martin Grayson who found Christian Ardisonne, who ran on and shot under the St Clement's keeper Matty Stables for the opening goal.

In the next 20 minutes Craig Newton and Jamie Nixon both went close to adding to the scoreline.

St Clement's first chance came after 21 minutes when Stuart Cuthbert passed to John Alcock who laid the ball to Shaun Webster but the Park keeper Barry Wheldon saved well. Seven minutes later Danny Snaith had a 20-yard right foot shot go just wide.

St Clement's equalised after 31 minutes. A right wing cross by Gareth Moore was met by skipper Lee Nicholas with a bullet header from 15 yards, which flew into the roof of the net - a great goal.

In the last 10 minutes of the first half Ardisonne had a good chance to put Park head again but a timely block by Cuthbert saved a certain goal, and he had another fine chance with an 18-yard shot but Stables saved well.

St Clement's played much better in the second half. Shaun Webster went close after 51 minutes but Wheldon saved well. After 64 minutes two great chances fell to substitute Danny Peace - his first was partially saved by Wheldon, the second saw Wheldon tip over for a corner.

St Clement's winning goal was scored after 75 minutes when Shaun Webster scored at the second attempt, his first was partially saved, but he followed up and made sure the second time. Three minutes later a right-wing cross by Snaith found Will Moore whose header was well saved by Wheldon. The last two minutes saw Park almost level the score twice.

The trophies were presented by Rob Wilkinson of Television House, Pickering, the sponsors of this competition.

Man of the Match winners were Craig Newton for Duncombe Park and Stuart Cuthbert for St Clements 3rds.
