Rugby stalwarts rewarded
NATIONAL judges have showered praise on the volunteers who help make Malton and Norton Rugby Football Club thrive.
The Rugby Football Union (RFU) President's XV Recognition Awards, presented at Twickenham, are designed to reward the efforts of volunteers in Community Rugby throughout England.
This year, Malton and Norton RFC won the More Volunteers category.
Malton and Norton chairman Stephen Armitage said: "In addition to the huge pat on the back which the award will give our band of volunteers, the RFU will present the club with a trophy and a cheque for £500 which will be put to very good use within the club. In partnership with the RFU we are planning a presentation event in the near future which will be a further opportunity to thank and reward our volunteer members."
The club was also voted runner up in the Club School Links category.
RFU President Bob Taylor said: "Rugby is a team game, both on and off the pitch.
These awards highlight the efforts that our teams of individual volunteers go to make rugby the great game that it is."
Pocklington Rugby Sevens
Malton and Norton travelled to the 50th Guinness Pock Sevens on Good Friday, where wind, rain and hail failed to dampen spirits.
It was a freezing day but 2,000 rugby enthusiasts still packed into Percy Road. After sixand-a-half hours of quality rugby, Hull lifted the trophy for the second time in three years.
Hull made high scoring progress to the final, where they won 19-7 against a Northallerton side packed with Army Fijians.
For Malton & Norton it was a case of so near and yet so far. They had a convincing 29-0 win against local invitation side Yapham Badgers, which took them through to a big test against the tournament holders and army sevens champions, 3rd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Malton made a marvelous start and built a 10-0 lead that looked as though it would be enough to take them into the quarter-finals, but the three Yorks grabbed two late tries and kicked the only conversion in the swirling wind to win it at the death.
There were numerous other keenly contested, and several feisty, encounters, with three of the four quarter finals decided by a single score, while three games during the day went to sudden death extra-time.
