FORMER Yorkshire Point-to-Point champion jockey Guy Brewer is celebrating a significant milestone in his career as a trainer, writes Ian Appleyard.

Young Hurricane, trained by Brewer in Norton, won the Pertemps Network Champion Hunters' Chase at Stratford last weekend.

The race is one of the top three Hunters' Chases in the country alongside the Cheltenham and Aintree Foxhunters and was worth just under £15,000 in prize money to winning connections.

Ridden by John Dawson, who is currently Yorkshire's leading Gentleman jockey, Young Hurricane was a 16-1 outsider but pulled off a shock to beat the Punchestown Champion Hunter Chase winner Balnaslow and the Paul Nicholls' trained favourite Wonderful Charm.

Brewer, who shares the training work load with his wife Freya, said: "We were not sure if we'd beat the Irish horse - but he's obviously better than we thought.

"He's had problems with stomach ulcers - it's amazing how much they can bother them - so we've been treating him and changed his routine and his feed," he added. "We hoped he would run well because he's been well since we changed everything."

The bay gelding, now aged 11, is owned by Charles Helfferich, Libby Helfferich, Jane Kibble and Jane Younger and had only won three times in 24 races during the previous five years.
