SCARBOROUGH Athletic visit Evo-Stik League division one south side Shaw Lane in the FA Trophy preliminary round this weekend.

The game will have added poignancy in the wake of the death of Daniel Wilkinson during a recent game for Shaw Lane.

Wilkinson had also played for Scarborough in the last two years.

The 24-year-old collapsed on the pitch and died from an under-lying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (AVRC), the same disease that caused former Premier League footballer Fabrice Muamba to retire in 2012 after collapsing during an FA Cup game.

His former teams have already held minute's silences in his memory and collected money for charity.

However, in the weeks since his death, The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise £50,000 so that amateur clubs can afford heart screening tests.

Scarborough are now 11th in the Evo-Stik first division north table after picking up only one point from a possible six last week.

On Saturday, they visited 18th placed Droylsden and earned a point from a thrilling 2-2 draw in front of a crowd of 186.

Benny Iglehon scored to put Scarborough into the lead after 32 minutes with the only goal of the first half.

Adam Farrrell equalised for the home side after 49 minutes.

Within a minute, the visitors had restored their lead thanks to a David Brown goal but, after 58 minutes, the home side equalised for the second time with a Stephen Lewis penalty kick.

Last Tuesday, Scarborough entertained Brighouse who are the current leaders in the league table in front of a crowd of 290 and lost 1-0, the only goal of the game was scored by Leon Osbourne in the 33rd minute.

Whitby Town midfielder Dave McTiernan celebrated his rise to third in the club's all-time leading appearance chart with a goal last Tuesday against Ashton United.

McTiernan, now in his second spell at the club, scored as Whitby beat Ashton United to maintain second spot in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.

He was expected to make his 413th appearance for the club against Grantham Town last night.

Centreback Jamie Poole, meanwhile, has signed for Whitby on dual forms with Northern League side Guisborough Town.

Whitby will be looking to maintain their impressive form when they visit league leaders Buxton on Saturday afternoon.

Last weekend, they beat Sutton Coldfield Town 2-0 thanks to a brace of Dale Hopson goals.

Hopson scored after 6 and 15 minutes and missed a great opportunity to complete his hat-trick before halftime.

Whitby played most of the second half with ten men after skipper Steven Snaith was sent off for a challenge on Lee Smith. The crowd was 249.
