WOMBLETON Wanderers completed a newitts.com Beckett League double in only their second season by beating Sinnington in the Victory Cup final.

Having gained promotion as division two champions last year, they have taken the first division by storm this term, winning 14 of their 18 games, and now seeing off the Sinners 4-2 in the final of the top-four end-of-season cup competition.

The Sinners, who finished fourth in the table, twice went close in the opening 10 minutes.

Lee Mitchell set up Stuart Wilkinson but his goal-bound effort was cleared off the line by Mark Haines, and Stuart Wilkinson was clean through but his 12-yard shot hit a post.

Wombleton took the lead after 13 minutes with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick by Jordan Rivis.

Two minutes later, Toby Edwards had a good chance for Sinnington but his 20-yard shot went over the bar, and Lee Mitchell also saw a 25-yarder go over.

Rivis tried his luck again with a 22-yard free-kick which was well saved by Sinners keeper George Brown, but, two minutes later, Wombleton were awarded a penalty for handball and Luke Tateson smashed it home.

The Sinners again tried to respond - Gary Mitchell seeing an overhead kick go over the bar following good work by Wilkinson, and the impressive Will Sanders having a free-kick blocked by Wombleton skipper Sean Walker.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Wanderers made it 3-0, thanks to a deserved goal for man-of-the-match Josh Tateson.

Sinnington pulled one back after 50 minutes with an Edwards penalty, but Mike Turnbull’s lovely through ball saw Tom Ellis make it 4-1 after 63 minutes.

A second Edwards goal five minutes from time gave the Sinners faint hope but it was too little too late.

Kirkdale United completed a treble when they won the Panasonic League Division Two Cup to add to the division two title and the Gordon Harrison Memorial Trophy.

Playing in dreadful conditions, they beat Pickering Knights 2-0.

Kirkdale’s Paul White and Jordan Green, the man of the match, both hit the bar, the latter from 35 yards, while Greg Fawcett saw a 20-yard shot go wide.

They opened the scoring after 36 minutes when a lovely through ball by Jamie Harper saw Rob Galtrey skilfully round Knights keeper Dave Bointon and stroke the ball home.

White and Galtrey also went close in the opening 20 minutes of the second half, with the former also having an effort cleared off the line by Sam Leng after 75 minutes.

Galtrey scored his second 10 minutes from time, though, to seal the win, despite a late fight-back which saw Steve Carter, Ryan Boyes and James Boak all have good efforts for Pickering, the latter producing a great save from Darren O’Grady.

Tim Whincup was the Knights’ man of the match.
