KIRKBYMOORSIDE completed a trophy double last Wednesday when they won the Scarborough & District FA Harbour Cup for the first time since 2004.

The Moorsiders, division three winners in the York Minster Engineering League, beat Lealholm, who were runners-up in the Esk Vale & Cleveland League, 3-1 at Pickering Town’s Mill Lane ground in front of a crowd of 147.

They were unable to make it a treble on Saturday, though, as they lost 2-0 to Dunnington reserves in the York FA Junior Cup final.

Lealholm, who travelled with a depleted side last Wednesday, could have gone ahead when Kirkby keeper Adam Magson dropped a free-kick hoofed into the box but Mark McCarthy’s effort was cleared by the defence.

Sarjo Cham combined well with Jason Brown at the other end but, from the latter’s cross, Jack Dowson shot over from 20 yards.

The opening goal arrived on 14 minutes. Moorsiders skipper Chris Hodgson won the ball in midfield and laid it to Alex Strickland, who ran down the right and crossed for Aaran Rivis to tap home from inside the six-yard box.

The Moorsiders doubled their lead after 25 minutes. Hodgson crossed from the right, Rivis had an effort blocked on the goal line, and Strickland made no mistake with the rebound.

Lealholm’s Kyle Clacherty had a good effort deflected for a corner, while Rivis headed over for Kirkby from a cross by man-of-the-match Bradley Magson.

Lealholm came back out for the second half firing and pulled a goal back from a corner three minutes in. Clacherty’s shot was blocked but Andy Raw blasted in the rebound.

Mark McCarthy also headed wide from close range, Tom Raw had a good effort deflected for a corner by Rivis, and Nathan Gibson saw a 25-yarder go just wide.

The move of the game, on 69 minutes, then saw Darren Harland feed the ball down the left to Anthony Morgan, who passed onto the excellent Clacherty, whose first-time 20-yard shot produced an outstanding save by keeper Magson.

However, the Moorsiders, for whom Andrew Ferguson starred in defence, wrapped up the game after 74 minutes with the goal of the game against the run of play.

Alex Strickland linked up superbly with Jason Brown, who fed the ball back to the impressive Strickland, whose 18-yard shot curled in off the inside of the far post.

Back at the other end, Lee Brennan had a shot was blocked by David Gardner, while in the last minute the Moorsiders nearly made it four when sub Kieran Bowes set up Brown, whose effort was likewise blocked.

Kirkbymoorside: A Magson, Butler (Hague 87), Hodgson, Gardner, Ferguson, B Magson (Bowes), Brown, Cham, A Strickland, A Rivis, Dowson. Subs not used: E Strickland, Kiddle.

Kirkbymoorside had the chances to win Saturday’s final at Tockwith too but gaffes in either half presented Dunnington reserves the cup.

Both sides missed early one-on-one chances before Dunnington went in front on 14 minutes as Hodgson attempted to cut out a cross but only hammered the ball past keeper Magson.

Dunnington had the better of the next 20 minutes, while Kirkby’s best opportunities to level came from striker Strickland.

Either side of half-time, Dunnington’s Paul Crangle fired over from 20 yards and Sam Wildwood hit the bar.

Victory was sealed on 66 minutes as a throw by Magson went straight to Kieren O’Brien, who rifled the ball into the net from 20 yards.

Kirkbymoorside almost pulled a freak goal back on 77 minutes as Magson cleared the ball the full length of the field, only to see it go just wide.
