Wombleton Wanderers beat Thornton-le-Dale 1-0 to win the first division championship at their first attempt in the newitts.com Beckett Football League.

This gives Wombleton back-to-back league championships as they won the second division title last year to gain promotion as well as winning the League’s Division Two Panasonic Cup.

They were also runners-up in the Scarborough & District FA Junior Cup last season.

The Wombles are also through to the semi-finals of the Victory Cup this season which is the League’s “Top Four” Cup.

Wombleton took a bit of a risk against Thornton-le-Dale on Saturday when player/manager Luke Tateson opted for a new formation for the game with a 3-5-2, which the Wombles hadn’t tried before.

But it was the only way to get everyone playing in their preferred positions and it didn’t backfire on him or his team.

The Wombles started well, creating chances from the kick-off through wingers Jake Denison and Keelan Simpson.

Dale had a penalty appeal waved away after 11 minutes, but ten minutes before half-time the Wombles took the lead.

Their constant pressure paid off when Josh Tateson tried his luck with a 25-yard right-foot shot which flew straight into the top corner of the Thornton-le-Dale goal.

At half-time the Wombles lost key player Luke McLaren with an ankle injury.

Thornton-le-Dale were giving a lacklustre performance and they were on the back foot for most of the game, but defended well with keeper David Sturgess making two outstanding saves to prevent further goals.

Man of the match was Josh Tateson (Wombleton Wanderers). There were also impressive performances by Jordan Rivis, Jake Denison, and Keelan Simpson. Tom Atkinson won the Thornton-le-Dale award.

Sinnington have finished fourth after two excellent performances, on Saturday. They visited Kirkbymoorside Reserves and won 4-0, scoring two goals in each half.

Michael Bumby and David Wilkinson netted in the first-half and second-half goals followed from Toby Edwards and Bumby to give the Sinners three vital points. Man of the match for Sinnington was David Wilkinson.

Last Wednesday, the Sinners beat Union Rovers 3-0 at home with all the goals scored in the second-half by Stuart Wilkinson, David Wilkinson and Jon Mitchell, who was also man of the match for the Sinners, Lewis Jennison was man of the match for Union Rovers, who finish the season in seventh position.

• Monday night’s final league game in the first division between Kirkbymoorside Reserves and Thornton-le-Dale was cancelled because the Moorsiders couldn’t raise a team. The Moorsiders have finished in fifth position. Thornton-le-Dale, should they win this last game by two or more clear goals, will be runners-up. Otherwise Heslerton, currently in second position, will finish runners-up.
