WHITBY Town are safe for another season after a thrilling 2-0 home win against promotion-chasing Ashton United.

The Seasiders needed three points on Saturday to make sure of not being involved in any relegation fears this week.

Whitby scored late in the game with a goal from Steven Snaith after 79 minutes following good work by substitute Ross Gardner. Five minutes later Dale Hopson scored to double Whitby’s lead.

Whitby’s victory followed a 2-1 defeat at Nantwich Town. Hopson scored four minutes before the interval to put the Seasiders ahead.

But former Northern Ireland international Steve Jones scored an equaliser after 81 minutes, with Nantwich’s Harrison scoring the winner a minute later.

This Saturday Whitby, who are now 13th in the table, will visit 18th-placed Kings Lynn Town, kick-off 3pm.

Meanwhile, Scarborough Athletic’s play-offs dream is over despite thrashing basement side Padiham 6-1 on Saturday.

Ryan Blott opened the goalscoring for the Seadogs after five minutes with a brilliant overhead kick.

He added a second five minutes later.

Danny Wilkins pulled a goal back for the visitors, but a brace of Gary Bradshaw goals before half-time gave the Seadogs a 4-1 lead at the interval. Second half goals were scored by Paul Robson and Alex Metcalfe.

The Seadogs’ comprehensive victory followed a 1-1 draw at Warrington Town last Tuesday.

Dan Clayton scored to put the Seadogs ahead after 18 minutes, but Anthony Hickey equalised for the home side after 68 minutes to end the Seadogs’ play-off ambitions.

On Saturday, the Seadogs complete their league programme with a visit to Kendal Town, kick-off 3pm.
