MALTON ‘A’ retained the York Conservative Clubs’ Carlsberg UK Snooker League title with a 4-3 win over Fulford ‘A’ in their final fixture.

Championship rivals Acomb ‘A’ failed in the final round of games, losing 6-1 to Heworth ‘A’, giving Malton the honours by three points.

Malton got off to a great start at Fulford, winning the first two frames as Lee Taylor, with a 34 break, beat Sam Wass and Dominic Spiteri defeated Jim Lee.

Simon Weatherill failed as Tom Lewis won for Fulford ‘A’, but Steve Beal kept up his impressive form this season by scrambling home for Malton against Jamie Husband.

Alan Reed and Sam England hit back for Fulford, defeating Roger Ward (34 break) and Phil Hart, but Dan Pawson got the victory for Malton by beating Glen Mountain on the last frame.

Malton will be bidding for a league and cup double when they take on Bootham ‘B’ tonight (Wednesday) at the league’s presentation at Acomb.

Acomb ‘A’ had led the league from the first match to the penultimate game, but failed at the finishing line as only Richard Lillie managed a win over Gary Douglas.

Heworth’s Jordan Worobec defeated Dan Potter, then Mark Winskill edged past Paul Holmes (30 break) on the black, closely followed by another black ball game as Clive Whyte got home for Heworth against Nick Marchant.

Acomb then lost the last three frames with only Keith Thornhill providing any resistance as he lost on the black to Keith Lawrence.

Neil Wood and Nick Dyson sewed up the win for Heworth, beating Adrian Barraclough and Mick Borg respectively.

Malton’s Beal clinched the Worthington player of the year award having won 13 of his 15 matches. He was closely followed by Bootham ‘B’s Andy Proud and Fulford’s Ogley, both with 12 wins.

Clive Whyte, who hit a 68 break in the opening match of the season, won the Pasema Paving highest break award.
