MALTON & Norton RUFC are aiming to end Doncaster Phoenix’s season-long winning run as they count down to their crucial promotion play-off tie.

The Ryedale side host runaway Yorkshire One leaders Doncaster in their final game of the regular campaign tomorrow.

Already assured of second place, Malt will travel to the runners-up from Northumberland/Durham One for a promotion spot on Saturday, April 25.

Barring a bizarre sequence of results tomorrow Morpeth will finish second, and Malton club spokesman Bill Laidler said: “If we can put up a good, hard fight tomorrow then we can go to Morpeth full of confidence.

“We only lost 15-11 at Doncaster Phoenix earlier in the season and we look stronger now. We looked good at Bridlington last week so there are positives for us.”

The make-up of Malton’s back row has yet to be finalised, while winger Tom Newitt is unavailable for tomorrow but will be back next week.

Captain Sam Triffitt will not be risked tomorrow after three weeks out with a suspected cartilage problem, while Nick Daley is still out after breaking his collarbone nearly two months ago. Both could return for the play-off.

A season of “highs and lows” for York ends with a trip to North Ribblesdale tomorrow.

Coach Sean Bass believes the Clifton Park club’s bid to challenge Malton for second place has been undermined by a series of “silly results” on the road.

“We have had some highs and lows,” he said. “We have only lost three games at home and we would have been closer to Malton but for some silly losses on the road.

“Going to North Ribblesdale is a big ask, but we want to finish on a high.”

Stalwart Andy Kay returns to the first team, with Bass hailing his former team-mate as “a massive servant for the club”.

Goalkicker George Davies returns to the squad after being unavailable last weekend, while homegrown youngster Campbell Thompson steps up in the absence of Sam Thorpe.

A top-half finish is the target for Selby when the complete their Yorkshire One programme at Scarborough tomorrow.

Coach Richard Nicholson said: “It’s been a frustrating season and we’ve been inconsistent, but a lot of that has been driven by the injuries we’ve had.

“We have battled on and brought a lot of young lads through from the Colts so there are positives to come out of the year.

“Hopefully, we will finish in decent form and sneak into the top half of the table, which would be a good achievement for us.”

Pete Turner is back in the side, while long-serving forward Andrew Pocklington makes a return on the bench.

Pocklington close out their North One East campaign with a trip to leaders Ilkley tomorrow.

Pock will be aiming to repeat their 27-19 home victory over Ilkley in the first game of the campaign, but their hosts are on a 13-match winning streak which has taken them to the brink of the title.

Pocklington hooker Ben Stephenson is injured, but lock James Wilkinson is hoping to get the all clear after concussion.

Wingers Tim Nixon and Dan Pickard are both back in contention after being unavailable through work last week.

York RI’s final Yorkshire Four fixture sees them host Wensleydale at New Lane tomorrow.
