BROOKLYN’S adventure in the North Riding County FA Challenge Cup came to an end in agonising fashion at the quarter-final stage.

The Ryedale side, down to the bare bones, travelled to Wensleydale League high-fliers Colburn Town - who have had just one defeat all season - and after playing out a 1-1 draw on a terrible pitch, lost 7-6 on penalties.

Chances were limited in the first half with Marcus Godsell having the best chance for Brooklyn - his effort after being put through trickling wide.

Both keepers parried long-range efforts before the home side took the lead on the half-hour thanks to a delightful chip.

Their joy was short-lived as a Godsell header from a corner was saved only for Kristian Wilkinson - man of the match at centre-back alongside the similarly impressive Chris Seager - to hammer in the rebound home.

Brooklyn continued to press but Colburn dug in to keep the scores level.

The York Minster Engineeering League division one promotion-seekers upped their game as the pitch got heavier in the second half, and manager Matty Hood clearly went for the win - introducing David Thompson meaning they played the final 35 minutes with all four strikers on the pitch.

The substitute forced the keeper to pull off a fine save, while Godsell also had a glorious opportunity but couldn’t get the ball out of his feet at the crucial time.

Then, on 80 minutes, when a corner was only half-cleared, Simon Wall’s curling effort hit the inside of a post.

The rebound fell to Mikey Brown and a goal looked certain when fired the ball across the goalline towards Wilkinson, sliding in at the back post.

However, the ball bobbled up on the terrible surface and missed Wilkinson altogether.

Colburn themselves had a few half-chances late on but the tie went to a shoot-out.

Matthew Webster and Godsell both saw spot-kicks saved but classy full-back Steven Clay, Brown and Thompson all scored, while goalkeeper Kevin Jacques, in for Andy Slaughter, saved Colburn's first and fourth efforts to send the contest to sudden death.

Seager, Wilkinson and Callum Dunning all scored to make it 6-6. However, Andy Philips' effort drifted over the bar and Colburn despatched their ninth penalty to progress.

Stamford Bridge also endured shoot-out agony in the East Riding FA Qualifying Country Cup, losing 7-6 at Pocklington Town reserves after the tie had finished 1-1.

Stamford Bridge reserves were also knocked out, losing 4-1 at Hemingbrough reserves.

Meanwhile, in the York Minster Engineering League, Terrington Glory remained in a precarious position in the premier division after a 4-1 defeat at Wigginton Grasshoppers.

None of the top three were in action - leaders Old Malton St Mary's match against Harrison Signs was postponed - so the result saw the Grasshoppers, in fourth, close the gap, albeit while remaining some way off the podium places.

They took the lead early on when Harry McMillan’s through ball was cleared only as far as Jamie Willstrop, who slotted home from 20 yards.

Josh Luckhurst twice blazed wide and Luke Hall fired over but the next goal was to be Terrington’s - Alex Yates smashing an unstoppable shot past goalkeeper Michael Clancy.

Glory then got in the ascendancy, going close twice in quick succession, with Jamie Green’s goal-line clearance preventing the Ryedale side from taking the lead.

However, in the 67th minute, Jordan Holt headed home a Wilstrop cross and, two minutes later, Luckhurst raced clear to make it 3-1.

Luckhurst then added his second two minutes from time to seal the win.

With neither Brooklyn nor Malton & Norton in league action, division one table-toppers F1 Racing raced nine points clear at the top by despatching Tockwith 8-0, seven of the goals coming in the first half. Adam Tiffany led the way with a hat-trick.

Kirkbymoorside asserted their commanding position at the top of division three with an 11-0 trouncing of Jorvik Blades.

They remain a point clear with four games in hand on the chasing sides as they seek back-to-back promotions since joining the York league.

Alex Strickland continued to add to his growing goal tally with another four, while strike partner Sarjo Cham bagged two.

Danny Butterworth also netted twice with Aaron Rivis and Jack Dowson the other marksmen.

In division four, Settrington lost 3-1 at Huntington WMC, who went second after two goals from Shane Bogg and a Jermaine Rudd effort.

In reserve 'B', Adam Gray scored for Brooklyn as they drew 1-1 with Bishopthorpe United - both sides needing points to go clear of the drop zone.
