RYEDALE Sports Club recorded their second successive Scarborough & District League victory on Saturday to enhance their chances of beating relegation in division one.

It was the first time this season that Ryedale had won two weeks on the trot, and they did it in style too, thrashing Ayton 9-0.

It was also one of only four Scarborough league games played on Saturday as the wintry weather hit the area.

Playing on a heavy pitch, Ryedale went ahead from a 20-yard shot by Danny Meade, with Chris Rhodes doubling the lead before the break.

Both these players normally play for Terrington Glory in the York Minster Engineering League, but their game was off so they helped out their ‘second’ club.

Martin Foxton scored a solo goal soon after the resumption, after which Ayton tired, with Ryedale dominating and adding further goals through Sam Turnbull, Meade, teenager Jack Hall, and Rhodes, with a curling 25-yard effort In the last 10 minutes, Foxton scored two brilliant headers to complete a hat-trick.

The man of the match was centre-half Meade and there were also impressive displays by birthday boys Foxton, who turned 30 on the day, and Jack Hall, who turned 18.

The other first division game saw Whitby Fishermen beat Westover Wasps 3-1.

The Wasps had a wind advantage in the first half and they took the lead when Curtis Rose set up Mark Wade. They also hit the woodwork twice.

Neil Hart equalised for the home side just before half-time and, with the wind behind them in the second period, the Fishermen went ahead with a Steven Ross header and his brother, Mark, hit a third goal.

The men of the match were Ryan Braithwaite (Fishermen) and Curtis Rose (Westover).

In division three, Sherburn, a new team in the league this season, recorded only their second win when they beat Scalby Reserves 5-0.

Matty Pickard scored the only goal of the first half and completed his first hat-trick of the season in the second period.

Steve Parker and Matt Whitehall also scored in the second half to cap a much-improved all-round team performance.

Eastway Sports beat Sleights reserves 3-1 thanks a first-half brace by Mark Craven and a second-half John Crayson goal.
