MALTON were awarded 20 Yorkshire League division one points as opponents Huddersfield 1 failed to fulfil the fixture.

The walkover saw Malt move up to fifth place. Huddersfield were deducted 20 points and are now in relegation danger.

The same sorry fate befell Malton 1 in York & District League division one.

They now sit bottom of the table having been penalised 40 points for failing to raise teams for their previous two fixtures.

A weakened Malton 1 were a player short at Dunnington 1 and crashed 20-0.

Thornton-le-Dale sit pretty in second in division two after seeing off York RI.

In division three, Malton 2 lost 4-1 to York 4, with Steve Towse their only winner, but bounced back with a 17-7 victory over Selby 3. Wins came from Jimmy Mason, Andy Rising and Duncan Chapman, lifting them up to fourth place.

In division five, third-placed Malton 4 frustratingly lost a winnable match 3-2 at Selby 5. Peter Warwick and Mike Hammond both won, while Helen Craggs was well placed at two games up before suffering severe cramp, and Kevin Goddard went down 9-6 in the deciding rubber.

There was a better performance in a 4-1 win over Wigginton 6. Wins came from Andy Criddle, Goddard, Hammond and Chris Hodgson. Goddard showed great stamina in winning 3-2 having looked likely to lose through all of the last game. Hodgson, on his team squash debut, showed tremendous persistence, eventually winning his match 10-8 in the final game.

In York & District Ladies League division one, Malton 1 went down 7-14 at home to David Lloyd 1. There were wins for Fiona Brown and Craggs, and Denise Bigg grabbed a valuable point. The team are fourth.

Meanwhile, this week sees the club’s annual 20 minutes handicap tournament, with finals night on Friday.
