HOLDERS Old Malton St Mary's came from behind to surge into the semi-finals of the North Riding Saturday Senior Cup.

Treble-chasing Saints return to York Minster Engineering League premier division action on Saturday against title rivals Tadcaster Magnets and will go into the game not only clear at the top of the table but also buoyed further by this result against Teesside League outfit Nunthorpe.

They fell one down in unfortunate circumstances before winning with goals by Danny Fogg, player-boss Darren Dunning and Jon Newton, plus an own goal from a corner.

Playing at home, Saints had the wind at their backs to start with and dominated possession from the off, with the visitors happy to soak up the pressure.

However, after 10 minutes slack play gave Nunthorpe a free-kick which, despite being poorly taken, fell to a visiting player whose miss-hit his shot dropped invitingly to an attacker who gleefully smashed the ball home.

Malton came firing back, with skipper Robbie Baker and striker Tom Fenwick being denied by the keeper. The equaliser was a fantastic goal as Steve Baxter, with great hold-up play, fed winger Danny Fogg who hammered the ball into the top corner.

Malton swarmed forward again but Baxter's acrobatic effort failed to trouble the keeper.

The visitors then went within inches of regaining the lead after a slip from Dunning allowed a midfielder to advance on goal before hitting a rasping drive just wide.

Old Malton started the second half sluggishly but Nunthorpe threatened only briefly.

After quarter of an hour, Daman Cox crossed for Dunning to volley home despite the keeper getting both hands to the ball.

The third goal wasn't long in coming as Dean Nuttall's inswinging corner was deflected in off a defender's shoulder.

Late on, Cox again won back possession and fed Newton who easily beat the keeper to seal progression to the last four.
