A JIMMY BEADLE volley saw Scarborough Athletic end play-off rivals Spennymoor's seven-game unbeaten run at Queensgate.

The former York City youngster turned and volleyed home the only goal of the game on 32 minutes to avenge a 4-1 defeat earlier in the season and bolster Boro's top-five hopes in the Evo-Stik League division one north.

It followed a 4-0 home win over Brighouse Town on New Year's Day in which Gary Bradshaw, Alex Peterson, James Ghaichem and Beadle got the goals.

The Seadogs, whose injury and unavailability list saw joint player-boss Bryan Hughes make only his third start of the season at the weekend, go to 17th-placed Ossett Albion this Saturday (3pm) looking for another key win.

They were without suspended pair Ryan Blott and Matty Plummer against Moors, on top of a growing list of injuries, while striker Alex Peterson had already returned to Doncaster Rovers after the end of his loan spell.

Along with Hughes' recall, youngster Jamie Stewart came in at right-back and Tommy Wilson was brought onto the bench for the first time this season.

The Moors had the best early openings, Kallum Griffiths forcing a fine save from Joe Cracknell with a long-range effort destined for the top corner and Michael Roberts volleying a good chance wide.

But Boro took the lead after their first neat move of the game, on 32 minutes.

Patient build-up play down the right saw Ghaichem send a measured cross into the box and Beadle chested the ball into the path of strike partner Bradshaw on the edge of the box. Bradshaw knocked the ball back for Beadle to turn and hammer in.

Spennymoor sought an instant response but struggled to breach a well-marshalled defence, Dean Lisles and Ben Middleton restricting them to a couple of half chances before the break, captain Chris Mason heading the best of them wide.

The hosts started the second period on the front foot, Hughes having an effort blocked after a burst down the right from the energetic Bradshaw, while Paul Robson forced a diving save from keeper McHugh.

Moors later pushed players forward in search of an equaliser, but their long balls upfield were dealt with by the home defence, while Cracknell was not to be beaten, saving a Mason header in the visitors' last notable sortie.

Whitby Town, meanwhile, lost 3-0 at sixth-placed Workington on Saturday to drop to 15th place in the premier division.

Connor Tinnion put the home side ahead two minutes before half-time, and two goals followed from Gareth Arnison at either end of the second half.

Whitby have no game this weekend as scheduled visitors FC United of Manchester are involved in the FA Trophy, going to Conference North side Chorley. The league game has been rearranged for Wednesday, April 1.
