MALTON & NORTON’S excellent Yorkshire One run continued with another derby defeat - this time a 43-0 walloping of Bridlington.

The result followed recent wins over York and Scarborough and kept Malton clear in second place, hot on the heels of unbeaten leaders Doncaster Phoenix.

From the outset Malton were on the offensive and set up camp in the Bridlington 22-metre area.

After the initial sparring, the hosts were awarded a scrum close to the whitewash. Wing Ben Woodhouse took the ball and set up a maul for the home pack to drive forward.

Such is the organisation in the Malton pack that when they move forward they do so with purpose and with the ball secure, as they showed here, with Sam Triffitt the man to touch down.

A good conversion from the touchline by Zwelakhe Sodladla made it 7-0 after six minutes.

A scrappy period of play followed with Malton still holding the upper hand but unable to get the breakthrough.

Something had to give and with half an hour gone, Malton extended the lead. A set scrum five metres out from the Brid line was shunted backwards and Harrison was credited with the touchdown.

This was the trigger Malton needed, as from that point on they took total control.

With half-time looming, a brilliant run from defence from Vusumzi Dyantjies and Sizwe Zondo took Malton into the Brid half. The visitors managed to scramble the ball into touch but, from the lineout, Malton opened out and spread the ball wide for Zondo to speed over in the opposite corner.

With an interval lead of 17-0, the Malton crowd wanted more and were not to be disappointed.

From the restart, Malton were awarded a penalty which Sodladla delicately placed into the corner. A clean catch at the lineout by Ali Coe was driven forward and there was Harrison again to reap the benefit of his forward colleagues’ efforts.

Sodladla converted and Malton were now in full flow.

Next followed the try of the match, if not the season.

From the restart, Malton again opened out. Very slick handling in the backs saw the ball pass through several pairs of hands, mesmerising the Bridlington defence, before fly-half Nick Daley made a beautiful break before handing on to the supporting Harrison who raced 30 metres for his third try.

Sodladla’s conversion added to Brid’s misery which was compounded midway through the second half when they tried to hack forward scrappy ball from a lineout.

The ball bounced kindly into the arms of substitute threequarter Newitt, who needed no invitation to show his strength and skill as he raced around the defence to get his side’s next try.

Once again Malton attacked from the restart and quickly moved the ball to the backs.

Zondo entered the line from full-back and split the Bridlington defence apart with a mazy run before releasing and sending Newitt away for his second try of the day.

The conversion from Sodladla ended the scoring for the afternoon and the large contingent from Bridlington were silenced.
