CHAMPIONS Old Malton St Mary's returned to the top of the York Minster Engineering League premier division with a gutsy 3-0 win over Wigginton Grasshoppers.

The visitors made Saints work hard for the points and put their hosts under pressure for much of the opening half hour, carving out several chances to take the lead, the best of which was an audacious 20 yard curling drive from Matt Tiplady which rattled Malton's crossbar.

However, the champions showed exactly why they hold that title and weathered the storm before Callum Scott headed them in front on the half hour mark.

Malton then asserted themselves and broke the visitors' resolve moments into the second half when Tom Fenwick cut through Wiggy's back line to slot home.

Player-manager Darren Dunning put the icing on the cake, adding his team's third goal late in the game.

Matty Bower, Johnny Brown and Ollie Varley all netted for the Terrington Glory but it was not enough for victory against fellow strugglers York RI as they drew 3-3 at home.

Mark Woodward collected a brace for the visitors before being sent off. Darren Sellars hit RI's other goal.

Second-placed Malton & Norton bagged an important 3-1 win away to third-placed Heslington in division one.

Matty Reeves, Simon Reeves and Liam Preston were the marksmen, with Chris Dixon finding the net for the hosts.

There was also success for Malton & Norton reserves as they progressed in the East Riding County FA Qualifying Cup with a 6-3 victory at home to New Cleveland Wolves.

Stamford Bridge had a double triumph as theuir first team beat Ryedale-based York Minster Engineering League rivals Settrington 7-1 while their second string won 3-0 at Savoy United.

Kirkbymoorside, flying high in the third division of the York Minster Engineering League, despatched Strensall reserves 4-0 in the York FA Junior Cup - a competition the Ryedale side could well be looking to win.

Brooklyn's two sides had wonderfully matching results in the North Riding FA Challenge Cup - both winning 4-3 in penalty shoot-outs after their ties had ended 3-3.

The first team overcame Brotton Railway Arms while the reserves squeezed past St Mary's College.
